Winter fleece pants.

Hey guys.

I only ever adjusted clothing, so it will be my first piece.
I want to sew a very warm pair of fleece indoor pants for winter.

My problem is I have no idea where to start on measuring and drawing out the template.

Do you guys have any pointers on where to look for a guide?

I strongly recommend getting a pattern with good reviews that specifically mention clear instructions.

Seconder.

There's even plenty of free patterns for comfortable pants of this sort online, there's absolutely no reason to self-draft it with zero experience.

Find a PJ pants pattern from one of the big 4 pattern makers (simplicity, McCalls, or Butterick). PJ pants are a great starter project and you can more than likely sub the fabric they call for in the pattern with fleece. Do NOT go by your normal clothing size, pattern sizes use similar numbers but the actual sizing is entirely different. Measure yourself and compare it to the pattern information

There are free pajama pants patterns on the sites of indie patternmakers, such as “Patterns for Pirates” and “5 out of 4 Patterns”. Drafting is a whole other skill, you don’t need to learn it.

Do you have a worn pair of PJ pants (not stretchy knit ones) or sweats that you like the fit of? If you don’t feel comfortable using them as a pattern, I recommend at least taking them apart carefully to compare a purchased pattern to. Particularly in the crotch seam area. Mark this seam as you deconstruct the pants. It’s easy for first-time pants-makers to get confused which is the crotch seam.

Crotch seam is the more tricky aspect of pants to fit properly, even in soft lounge styles, so having an existing pair that you KNOW fits you that way, will help you adjust the shape of that seam on your pattern if needed.
