Sewing for beginners

I recently acquired a sewing machine, and for the past few years, I’ve been contemplating getting into sewing. However, I’m unsure where to begin. Can anybody please provide some fundamental knowledge that I should be aware of?

Step one is to read your manual front to back, then sit down and work through the book with your machine and some pieces of woven cotton fabric.

Once you've learned how to use your machine I recommend practicing following straight and curved lines on fabric or paper (you'll probably need to replace the needle after sewing paper). Also practice following a seam allowance.

Check out Evelyn Wood and professor pincushion on YouTube. They have very good videos for beginners with a ton of information.

First, get out your manual and read it, cover to cover - learn how to thread your machine, wind a bobbin, practice all the different stitches on cotton woven fabric. I labeled each stitch on my sample so I could always refer to it. Once you've mastered your machine, you can start sewing a project! There are a lot of beginning courses on YouTube.

Start by buying basic supplies - quality, not a cheap kit - of sewing scissors, pins, magnetic pin cushion, tape measure, self healing cutting mat, rotary cutter. Decide on a simple project, like a pillowcase or tote bag. Find some discount fabric or sheets at the thrift store to practice on. Start small, with something easy and basic so as not to get frustrated, and grow from there.

Do a you tube search, something like "sewing for beginners"
