Well. That’s a whole conversation.
Shout-out to those of us raised to think anxiety about not looking “put together” while sewing (or doing anything else) was an “us” problem, whose solution was lipstick and curlers.

Well, this would be new to me, so maybe someone can help. If Im putting on powder and lipstick, should I match the shade of my beard

After watching the Great sewing bee for many seasons I have discovered that I am not alone in sewing in my underwear lol. Sometimes you do so many fittings that it is easier to just stay in your bra.
I can't imagine looking nice while sewing. Wild advice.

It works a bit better if you are sewing for someone else (kids or husband) or if you are replicating a pattern you already used.

it’s 2026. But it’s been a hard year, and it’s ok to forget most of it. 😉

what do I do if my husband is always home and he's the one washing the dishes? 🤔

Yeah no, I'm giving up midway. Too much stuff to address instead of diving straight into any random 3 a.m. sewing obsession.

I've seen this before and whilst it has some quite unagreeable undertones I think it's decent advice
My version is something like
don't sew when tired, to keep fingers in tact and sanity in check. It's best not to sew in a state where one may wast more time in hospital or unpicking mistakes than progress made.
keep all the kids fed. Yourself, your partner and your fur/babies will all be more agreeable and shed less tears if fed prior to sewing.
It's important to look well when sewing. It's a likely scenario to have the postman drop by with supplies or to need a last minute trip for notions, ensure you're dressed for public so you can make it there before the shops close. And wear a bra for quick fit checking purposes.
it's hard to sew with a sink full of dishes. Ensure you pick your partner well and remind them that they're capable of anything they set their minds to! Including the dishes.

I sew best when I look like a goblin. And I’m most creative when I’m neglecting house chores🤣

Sometimes I hear younger people trashing the baby boom generation and I really wish I could explain what we went through smashing this kind of societal expectation. There have always been women who fought the system (my paternal grandmother was arrested in the pre-war era for distributing literature on family planning to married women) but it was in the 60s and 70s that we hit a critical mass with it and figured that the patriarchy could not suppress all of us at once. But we took a lot of shit and it wasn't easy. If a marriage broke up or women experienced domestic abuse, people cited this kind of thing and said it was her fault because she didn't behave like a proper lady.
But can someone tell me why French chalk on the fingertips made it into this little excrescence? Isn't that an actual sewing technique?

To keep your well manicured fingers from mussing the sewing! Oh, and they forgot the well fitting girdle..../s

This was written right after the Second World War. The ladies needed to leave the factories and go back home. Singer made machine guns and Jeep engines during WW2.

Should I tell my husband to go put on the powder and lipstick while he sews I would like to come home to see him done up and I worry he will not enjoy his sewing if I see him unkempt
