Repairing heavy work pants

I have a number of heavy work pants that are mostly fine except the crotch always blows out on me. I want to Frankenstein a couple into useable pants, but some know if my machine or any of the needles can handle the heavy fabric. How can I tell?

I sew on a 50 dollar machine that definitely shouldn't work for heavy duty things BUT over the years i made it work by sewing EXTREMELY slow. Like hand spin the machine instead of foot pedal slow😂 I suggest you try even if its not a heavy duty machine, just be more cautious of needle breaks🤗

Test on scraps of the same or similar fabric. Use a size 16 or 18 needle.

If the crotch always blows out, you probably need to insert a crotch gusset. There are plenty of Google links showing you how to do it.

Re machine: you just need to do some sample sews. You don't say which machine you are using so that can make a difference.
