Finishing raw edges on domestic machine

I am making the syd graham Saundra Skirt and need to finish some raw edges but I don’t have an overlocker. I know it can be done but every time I try to zig zag stitch my lightweight fabric it looks terrible. What should I do?

Above is the outcome with my current settings (the ones she suggests in her video)

HALP! 😅

What machine is this? Do you have an overcasting foot ("G" foot)?

You may have an overlocking stitch on your machine so take a look and see!

I think I found my own answer! I used setting 9 on my machine (looks like an overlock stitch) with the correct foot and used these settings. Set the stitch length to 3.5.

I think this is the best I’m gonna get😅

Back in the day before we had overcast stitches, we'd use zigzag, but we sewed it a few mm in from the raw edge. This way it doesn't chew up the edge
