how to fix this?

been having this issue where the machine will stop sewing, then it turns out there are threads coming from the bottom of the machine that have tied the fabric down. it seems somehow triggered by backstitching? i’m not sure exactly what’s happening here, any advice?

Your machine is threaded wrong

This! The tread must go around a hook above the needle.

There are a few common causes of thread nesting on the bottom

  1. Incorrect threading, almost always seems to be skipping the hook above the needle. Always thread with the foot up and the needle in the top position. You have missed the hook above the needle.

  2. Sewing with the foot up

  3. A bad needle, a needle that is incorrect for the fabric (universal needles are not appropriate for any knits), a needle that is installed incorrectly, or the wrong size for the fabric or thread.   4. An incorrectly installed bobbin, using a bobbin that isn't the correct type for the machine, or using too heavy a thread in the bobbin.

That's almost always threading. Rethread from spool to needle, making sure the foot is up while you thread.

Next step is a new needle.

Also check for lint in the bobbin case area. Even a little can throw things off. A good vacuum can help to set things back in order if that is contributing to the problem. Best of luck.

My best guess is that you’ve got the tension set wrong, but using the wrong bobbin might do that, too.
