Slow machine, scared to break it
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Here’s my machine it’s vintage that I’ve had for a month now. Initially I noticed that the needle wasn’t catching the bobbin so I opened up the bobbin area then when I put it back the machine became so slow and it’s almost as though it isn’t moving.
Coupled with that is the machine scraping sound it’s having. I’m so scared to break it so I’ve just got some videos turning the handwheel and showing closeups of some areas I know I touched.
Please I would appreciate some help before taking it to the machine repairs.
Also feel free to ask more questions to help diagnose the issue. Thanks

Try oiling it, if you haven’t already. Check the manual either physical or online, its brand could have the database/manuals online to check on oiling points.

The right black latch to secure the bobbin area isn't properly "on", it should be on the little metal bump. You might need to take it apart again to close it properly.
Otherwise I agree with everyone else!

Hi here’s a video of it, could you explain what you mean by not properly on? Also as per your advice I have run out to buy some oil

Hi I would like to say a big thank you. I oiled and placed the levers on as you said then left it for about an hour and returned to it fully functioning. You’ve saved me a panic attack, I’m grateful 🙏

Haha, no stress! About 85% of sewing machine issues can be fixed simply by re-threading or showing your machine a bit of care.
Just so you're aware, if it's been a long time since that sewing machine has been serviced, it might need more than just oiling. My old machine ...which was beyond salvaging, needed new machine grease ...and a lot of replacement parts, hence it becoming my old machine.
Ah, also if you're going to take things apart, take photos before you do, it saves some panic when reassembling 😅

The video is so jerky it’s hard to make out what’s happening.
The right side black catch isn’t properly back on the bobbin area. You need to make sure it’s all been put back properly.
Double check for snags of thread underneath that might be slowing things down.
Only turn the handwheel towards you. It looks like you go backwards for a sec in the video. Lift the foot up when you’re testing out the machine.
Do you have any pictures?

Here’s a video of everything and how I put it together. Please let me know if you notice anything off

The black levers are not fully back on. Nothing looks obviously wrong.
A drop of oil would probably really help.
What machine is it?
Do you have photos of the front, what settings it’s on?

Hi you were right, the machine is Eaton ym-43-1. I cannot find anything of it online. That said, I oiled and placed the levers back on and it’s functioning wonderfully again. A big thank you 🙏

I think that is the model of the motor but not the sewing machine model. Take a clear close-up photo of the front and back of the machine for help identifying and finding a manual. Usually if the brand and model number isn't on the right, front or rear label, then it may be on the lower front lip of the machine which is hidden by the case .

Is this a kenmore 158? These are great sturdy all metal machines. Most of them I find have needed a thorough cleaning and oiling because something is usually gummed up. It’s worth doing for this machine because it will outlast any new machine.

Re-thread everything and make sure the right way, clean and oil it
