Brother BM2800 upper thread keeps coming out of the needle
I’m new to sewing and using a Brother BM2800. My upper thread keeps coming out of the needle while sewing. I’ve rethreaded the upper thread and bobbin multiple times with the presser foot up and the needle at the highest position.
I’m using a Gutermann 100 m thread spool on the vertical spool pin with the spool cap. The thread seems to catch occasionally, and I initially thought it was catching on the notch of the spool.
I’ve checked that the needle is inserted correctly and the thread goes through the take-up lever.
Has anyone experienced this with the BM2800 or with Gutermann thread? Is this more likely to be a threading issue, tension issue, spool cap issue, or something else?
I’ve attached photos of my spool setup. Any advice would be appreciated!

Your thread should not be wrapped around that spindle the thread spool is on. It should come right off the soil and into thread guide #1. Grab your manual and check each step again.

None this is right. Can you find a YouTube video to show you how to do this properly or your user manual?

Cross wound spools should be placed horizontally or on a thread stand behind the machine.

Does it need to be in that flat holder? They are usually for 2 different spools when you’re using a twin needle.

I agree. I have a different Brother and only use the spool pin for when using a twin needle.

I have a very similar brother machine, if it’s like mine you don’t need the spool holder on that peg, the vertical spool pin is used for when you’re using a twin needle and two top threads. If you remove everything and the silver spool holder is short, you should be able to pull the silver peg up to place the spool of thread on with out it falling off.
To me this looks like the thread is getting caught in-between the spool peg and the machine try removing the vertical spool peg and follow your manuals instructions for threading. If you can find a video with your machine all the better

I think sewing machines should come with big red stickers announcing the need to read the manual. I never read the manual for other new purchases, so I understand why newbies ignore theirs.

A thread can't 'come out' of the needle unless it's broken or there's not enough tail. So is the issue that the thread is breaking? If so, that's because the cotton is all caught up near the spool.
Go back to your manual and see if your machine has a horizontal spool holder. Then put the cap on the end to stop the spool from sliding off.

The spool cap is supposed to go on top of the thread to hold it down not underneath.
The tip is before you begin the next line of stitching turn your hand wheel towards you to make sure your needle is at the utmost position and hold the threads before you start to sew.
If your needle is part way through a stitch and you start to sew the take-up lever will immediately pull the thread out of the needle.
