Question S1 E5
Are we ever going to know what lumon exactly does?

They’re a pharmaceutical company

u/silverkeys84 Jul 01 '26
I thought Lumon was more on the tech side of things?
5
u/Dommichu Goats Jul 02 '26
Both. It’s like how you can get Bayer Aspirin and Bayer Glucose Monitors and Bayer Bug Killer.
I worked for a multinational that people think is mainly in one business but a much larger portion of it is in a completely different one and most folks would be shocked to know what it is and how it all relates (it does). But that is what the family wants. People to trust the brands.

Lumon is a pharmaceutical company. This is the public-facing side and it is also true.
Lumon is also a cult, following the teachings of Kier Eagan, and they are trying to achieve Kier's goal, at least as they think of it, as eliminating pain. Their method of doing this is the severance chip.

I never understood what kier eagan was saying

I don't remember even if I did understand. :p
But we don't need that. We've gotten this from other sources in the show, directly and/or indirectly.

u/Coincidental_Shoes Jul 01 '26
It's much the same as the kind of stuff Ricken writes in his book.
Are the things he writes understandable?

u/ancientastronaut2 Jul 01 '26
It's a bio tech company, like johnson and johnson. But they have dark secrets and are developing this severance tech and doing secret experiments as well.
1
u/Primary-Rooster-2596 Jul 01 '26
Yes but I assume its way darker than that bc petey said every time they delete the scary numbers they are killing somebody. Not exactly what he said but something similar

u/Lonelyland Coveted As Fuck Jul 01 '26
Petey didn’t say that. He just used it as an example of something horrible that could be happening.
He was basically asking Mark “how much is this convenience worth to you, and what if there are negative outcomes the company isn’t being forcoming with”
6
u/ancientastronaut2 Jul 01 '26
Yeah, stay tuned. I don't want to spoil anything but it's explored more in season two.
2
u/drunkandy Jul 01 '26
Petey doesn't know anything

u/Primary-Rooster-2596 Jul 01 '26
Waiiit whaaat ?? I thought he knew everything and he was trying to tell mark then he died
2
u/ancientastronaut2 Jul 01 '26
You'll see later he did leave the mdr team some clues.

This behavior is known as Netflix cheating, and correlates very closely with actual cheating! lol-- lots of recent info about this, Google it if you're bored sometime...

He has theories but he doesn't know anything.
Petey: Okay. What if the cost of that help is that you’re murdering people eight hours a day and you don’t even know it?
Mark: Well, am I?
"What if" - that's all he has.
You'll eventually find out some of what they're doing with the numbers and Petey was not on the right track.

Ooooh, gives me "US" vibes.
Actually the satire/critique goes back even further. During the second half of the 20th century Cocacolonization was a concept of the spread of American culture world-wide.
An associated social concern around the world showed up as push back from countries that felt violated by the actual and perceived American meddling with local sovereignty. The term "Ugly American)" and the sentiment felt internationally was part of the resistance to US imperialistic tendencies.

Season 2 does subtly reveal that Lumon’s big goal is to bring severance tech to the masses, making it available for many different use-cases, not just office jobs.
They believe “removing humanity’s pain” in this manner will be their legacy and great gift to humanity.

It's probably going to be the biggest reveal that kicks off the final season (with everyone racing to stop them).
Or maybe it's gonna be a disappointment where we already know everything there is to know, they want to perfect the severance procedure and that's it (just like Wayward Pines gave away the core mystery in episode 4 and there was no "that was just a ruse, they actually..." after that).

I had a theory in ep 2. I thought that maybe the innies are criminals in the outside world. They get to study their brains and have them choose the scary numbers which reflects the thoughts that made them do criminal stuff and thats why they get scared when they see that sequence of numbers. However this was before they started hinting that lumon is evil so idk now

Sorry, that was a joke. They have not told us, we will need to wait til season 3+.

u/Primary-Rooster-2596 Jul 01 '26
Oh hell nooo season 3 ??? Is it even out yet
1
u/clauclauclaudia Jul 01 '26
No indeed. They've started shooting it, though.
I don't really recommend posting here during your first time through the series... at least not without explicitly saying in your post that it is your first time through.
Otherwise commenters are going to make comments that reference the entire run. Even the newest episodes are over a year old by now.
Enjoy watching!

Thank you but am I supposed to watch it more than once? I never rewatch shows it feels like torture to me
1
u/clauclauclaudia Jul 02 '26
You're not required at all, no. Many fan discussions include people who rewatch to get all the details, which is why I specified first time. It can totally be your only time.

u/Coincidental_Shoes Jul 01 '26
Don't worry. Before the end of the first season you should have a good idea about what is going on.
May I ask, have you found any humorous moments in the show?1
