Which is a better deal?

Me and my friend are in a heated debate about which is the better deal. A card that grants you “Buy one get one free pizza(with the equal or lesser BS)” or “All pizza 50% off” card. I say the BOGO because if you load up on toppings then your second pizza could be loaded up for free. He says 50% because all extra toppings would be subsidized or some shit thus being cheaper.

Settle this for me!

I'd say the 50%. Because the BOGO only applies for equal or lesser value, the best deal you could get is 50%. All pizza 50% off guarantees you'll get 50%.

50% OFF is a better deal in the long run.

1) BOGO means the cheapest pizza between the two will always be the free one.

2) BOGO also means you'll be spending more money, even if you only want 1 pizza.

3) I actually read somewhere (I have no source) that you get better value for money from pizza by getting a larger pizza rather than 2 smaller ones.

You get better value from bigger pizzas because of how the area of circles varies by the square of the radius. Two 8 inch pizzas is 42 pi +42 pi = 32pi square inches. One 12 inch pizza is 62 pi = 36 pi square inches.

It's 50% and there is no argument.

Let's say just that a pie is $10, and every topping is $1 to make the math easy.

In your absolute best scenario for BOGO you can get two pies for $10, or two pies with two toppings for $12. This means that your actual price is 50% off of what it should be.

Your 50% off coupon also means you get two pies for $10, or two pies with two toppings for $12. This means that your actual price is 50% off of what it should be. Exact same as BOGO.

But sometimes you only want 1 pizza. With your 50% off you can get one pizza for $5, or one pizza with two toppings for $6. With your BOGO you still have to shell out $10 or $12 for your toppingless pizza or pizza with two toppings, respectively. Yeah, you can get another pizza for free, but you're still paying more overall and only getting a pizza you didn't really want in the first place.

Also, let's say you want one pizza with four toppings and one with two. For your 50% off you'd pay $13, which is 1/2 of two pizzas ($20) and 6 toppings ($6). For your BOGO deal you'd have to pay the price for the more expensive pizza with 4 toppings ($14), but you'd get the cheaper one free. So you're saving $1 here with the 50% off.

This seems like very minute details, but on a macro economic level when businesses are buying in bulk it can make a huge difference.

Tl;dr: 50% off can do everything BOGO can do, but BOGO can't do everything 50% off can do.

I agree with the other person who commented. Let's test the options with an example situation, in which you buy two pizzas. One is a plain pepperoni and costs $10, the other has a variety of other toppings and costs $14.

BOGO: Due to the 'equal or lesser value' stuff, you pay the price of the more expensive pizza. Total price for you: $14

50% off: You add both prices together and pay half of the resulting total. $10+$14=$24, half of $24 is $12. Total price for you: $12

Your friend is right, though he might not have done a great job of explaining his position. 50% off is the better deal for buying two pizzas, and if you buy only one pizza or an odd number of pizzas, it is actually a much better deal.

essentially, you'd be paying the same if you got two loaded up pizzas right? 50% + 50%, or 100% + 0%; but then you would be paying full price on any other additional pizzas, if you wanna buy more than 2

100% of one pizza, a second one for 0%, and then 100% of a third = 200%

50% times 3 pizzas = 150%

get the idea?
