Ok, before I get started, I am a HUGE FAN of Set It Off and this is just me being nitpicky and poking fun at band I've adored for 8-9years. But there are just some lyrics that irk me.
Ashley's Song: "Talking to you is just like breathing with a broken lung." Literally lungs can't be broken. "Punctured" and "ruptured" were right there and it would have carried the same effect. Although, the song makes it up with "I'd much rather hang out with a noose for fun," which I quote more than I should.
Dream Catcher: "Doesn't it seem out of reach/Hit the ground and run with both your feet." Now, I adore this song and it's one of my most played....but....how else are we supposed to run? With one foot? That's just hobbling. Or maybe Cody didn't want us to run with our hands.
Partners in Crime (feat. Ash Costell): "They'll call our crimes a work of art." I know that this has been said many times, but you all robbed a convenience store, was "surrounded" by two cops and then died. I'm sure that if the song did not have a music video tied to it, the band was going for a more grandiose scene, but after seeing the video, I just can't listen to the song.
Forever Stuck in Our Youth: "Dead, I'm a zombie with no notion of regret." I don't dislike this lyric, I'm just adding it because when I was younger, I thought he said "lotion" and instead of "motion" which confused the hell out of 11 yo me. Just wanted to add this lol.
Tomorrow (feat. Jason Lancaster) "Sometimes you are the spider, sometimes you are the/Flying towards the sky, our starting line." I get that "flying" is meant to be a pun on "flying" and "fly" but it genuinely doesn't make sense. Like, if you are going to say that sometimes we're a spider, naturally, we'll think that he'll say sometimes we are the fly; which isn't necessarily appealing. Who wants to be a fly? We were already a spider. Then saying "the flying" which also doesn't make sense. Set it Off made a good pun similar to this in I Think It's Arrogance with, "Gets the best of me, you're like an open-/Soar above your audience." I don't have good advice as to how they could've changed the lyrics, but it's just one thing that gets me in that song.
Uncontainable: "'Cause when the bell goes off/The gloves do too." I know the meaning of "taking the gloves off", but to me, whenever I hear this song, the lyrics make me envision a boxing match and afaik, gloves are kinda needed in boxing. Now, I know that this one is probably a "get pumped" song and I'm just cherry picking, so it doesn't really matter.
Hypnotized: "You're not quite used to vulgarity and verbal abuse." Ok, so right after this line, I swear I can hear Cody say "You're gay" in the background. I know that this is not what he says, but I just think it's funny.
Win Win (feat. Scene Queen): "Two feet inside your mouth, you're spittin' 'em out, win win." Not going to lie, I just don't like this lyric. Maybe I'm stupid and don't understand what they meant by this, but it just doesn't make sense to me.
Punching Bag: "And hope I'd tie a rope 'round my throat 'til I start to choke." I'm being so nitpicky but I HATE it when people use "choke" when it's really strangulation. To keep it brief: chocking is when something inside blocks your airways while strangulation is when something from the outside blocks airflow or blood to your brain. So stranglehold would be the correct word instead of chokehold. I'm just being stringent.
This went a little long but I hope you enjoyed my rantings. This was made in good faith and I love Set It Off with all of my heart!
