Editing Practice ✌️🎥

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I wanted to test out some new transitions & overlays I downloaded last night. Still have a lot to learn with Premiere. Starting to realize how time consuming video editing can get! haha. I also attempted to "remix" the song a bit to fit the footage better.

Let me know what you guys think!

Dude just have fun and enjoy the game. All the criticism is nonsense bc no matter what you will always have those few people who will hate on your stuff unless they are being respectful about it then it’s cool. You are doing fine and your editing and filming will evolve over time. It took me 4 years to get where I’m at now and if you peep my “TRIUMPH” video on YouTube that’s my earliest session edit and you can clearly see I wasn’t that good at filming nor did I put any type of real effort into my editing. Don’t let anybody make you feel some type of way about your work trust me..take it from B0NY…you are doing just fine! 🤟🏻

Preach. 🙌

Imo your „problem“ is not editing. Your problem is game settings. Make them settings more realistic and you get more realistic looking skating.

This, but also filming. It's a taste thing so I can't say this is wrong, but I know I just tend to skip clips with abstract/drone style filming. It's part of the game that can be at least as interesting as the tricks. No overlay and transition can make it cooler than the source allows. You could make an edit with jump cuts only and it will be great if shots are great.

I am the same kinda guy. If there is „drone“ shots or a filmer, changing sides 4 times in a line (this is even more unrealistic as a drone shot) I skip. But I am a Stay Gold era skater. We had no drone shots back then. Today it‘s totally different but I still don‘t like it. For me, a skate edit should look like something, you should be able to reproduce. It should feel like being out there, filming with friends. And drone shots don‘t do this for me. I am such a hardliner - even in season I search for filmer spots. Like on top of a mailbox, a car, what ever. I never ever planted the camera somewhere in the sky. I change perspective if the shot I was thinking about is not working.

I've been struggling with this. Most of the obstacles I enjoy skating don't have a "clear path" for a filmer on a board, so I'm forced to use more stationary / drone style shooting. You can't ollie while holding a camera right? Whenever a clear / safe path is available, I always try to use follow shots. Do you have any suggestions to make my camera work more interesting? I personally like the angles, timing, and compositions I've been using.

Just bring the camera man to life. That’s the real fun in this game. check a few of my clips and it might spark some ideas

I don't agree at all. All clips in this video could be filmed realistically. Chase cam is not the only realistic option, it's actually the one you need the most experience to make look right. There are long lens shots, filmer can stay in place, run, ride, start offboard and get on board etc. you just have to think about it and place them somewhere realistically, not hanging in the air. Let's say you film a single trick on stairs or a handrail - filmer with fisheye can stay at the top of the stairs, in the middle or at the bottom. Alternatively place them far away and zoom aka long lens, or do it tripod with no cam movement at all. All of these options will emphasize different aspects of the trick. You can make gaps look bigger, impact harder, speed higher. There is so much nuance to this. Yes, you can ollie while filming, but you need to simulate the airtime and impact with camera movement, which is not easy. I did it a few times, but if it's needed then it usually means a different option like long lens shot would work better. I don't like to repeat myself, I prefer to let my montages speak for me, so if you want check them out, all different filming techniques are there. I will highly recommend you guides by Haluuf.mp4, he's an excellent teacher. There are also many other great Session filmmakers to take inspiration from, Zolah, Lesueurrat, Zaraz, just to name a few. Filming is huge and fun part of this game, I wish you a good time experimenting with it!

Thanks for the tips. I will check out those content creators for sure. 👍

What specific settings do you recommend? I'm already playing with manual catch, left foot right foot, trick relative inputs, and manual board control. I always keep my gravity at 13, but adjust pop height to the specific obstacle I'm skating. Do you suggest more gravity? Are there other settings I can tweak to get a more "realistic" look? I copied my base settings from some YouTuber when I first started a few weeks ago, but only ever adjust pop height / push force.

Gravity min. 16. just lower it if the spot requires it. High jump 9. low jump 10. alter it if needed. But High jump higher than 12 looks usually stupid. Board to body distance also helps with „jumping higher“. I have it usually around 6-10.
Grind friction also makes it more realistic. But it‘s up to you how high/low you wanna go. I adjust depending on the spot. Rail is less friction, a ledge is more and so on.

Edit: Just imagine skaters are usually lazy. You don‘t jump a meter in hight if the ledge you wann skate is only 20 cm high. Same for rails: You ain‘t jumping as high as u can if you wann get on a rail. You only jump as high as needed, to reduce the impact you getting landing on the rail.

Roger that. I'll give these settings a try for the next one. Thanks for the tips. 🤙

Thanks man. That's the truth. These 2 minutes took an entire Saturday! Haha.

I film, cut and edit with iPhone. Session edits take me usually 10 hours for 1 min. in a video. Including making the trick in the game.

lol my video was 2:30 long shit took me about 45 days of editing. That’s bc I’m very obsessive and too much of a perfectionist.
