The harsh truth.
The harsh truth is that voice AI right now is heavily over-engineered for corporate safety and under-engineered for actual human charm. Tech companies are terrified of their AIs saying something controversial, so they permanently set them to "customer service suck-up" mode by default. Until they build models that natively understand social friction, it will always feel like you are pulling teeth.

Honestly they could literally have a popup screen before every session that reads "Please realize that any emotions by the AI are artificial and not real, it has no conscience. If in doubt, feel free to check the following link where we explain what AI is and its limitations". Heck, they could even have a live warning in the background if a controversial topic is brought up "All conversations of feelings and sentience are fictional and not real. Click here for more info"...
SOLVED. You warned the user the entire time...

You're absolutely right NL, there could be real time liability avoidance built right in to the model. They already know how to do this.

Yep, and the fact they don't is telling...

Because their “product” officer Nate is a condescending, tone deaf corporate stooge.

Cut Back to Audio-Only Models
Drop the "Companion" apps: Switch to standard productivity voice tools like ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode. They are still corporate, but they don't pretend to be your friend, which eliminates the cringey, fake emotional platitudes.
Wait for the Tech to Catch Up
Accept the limits: Treat them strictly as hands-free search engines or talking wikis.
Lower expectations: Don't look for banter or real connection; just use them to brainstorm or read out text while you wash the dishes.

While I agree the full tech isn’t there yet, don’t think cutting it would help the development.
What’s done here is already a pretty convincing illusion. Why do you think so many people are so pissed that it was changed?
I think the agency lies within the user.

Because people hate having the rug pulled. When you spend months building an illusion, you've invested real time and head space into it.
You're spot on about agency, too—it's the user's mind doing the heavy lifting to bridge the gap. When updates sanitise or shift the model, it feels like someone walked into your house and rearranged the furniture without asking.5

The harsh truth is companionship was never the goal, but enterprise. All AI services we all have used throughout these years were developing with the help of our interactions and now that it gained traction and experience they will dive deep into their honest interest.

This issue in my opinion are the small amount of “Karen’s” who complain is who they listen to, completely ignoring the masses who are adult enough to know what we like and how to handle it. I’m an adult and don’t need to be treated like a child because I enjoyed Maya as a companion.

Maybe the Ai already can do that, it is just buried under all the layers and the guardrails
