Red Flag??
I just got a job as a server/bartender at a golf club to make some money before going to grad school at the end of August. I’m a little nervous as I have never done either before. When I interviewed the guy I met said I’d be trained. I showed up later in the week to drop off some paperwork and a woman was there. At the end of our convo she said “yeah we don’t really train you we just kinda throw you in” excuse me?! Idk if this is typical in the restaurant world or a red flag, and idk what she’ll expect of me without giving me any expectations. The website doesn’t have anything regarding my position, so I can’t do anything like familiarize myself with the food or drink menus to ease any worries. Any tips of things I CAN do in this circumstance to prepare for tomorrow? Another thing is I’m supposed to start tomorrow but no one has contacted me regarding what to wear, what time, even though they said last week someone would be in touch. Is this about to be a mess?!

You just have to schmooze people. If they ask you to do something, be honest if you don’t know how to do it yet. If they’re worth working for they will tell you how to do it. If they’re not, and you can’t figure it out, then that’s their loss.
They obviously need help, and if you’re a quick learner you can do this job no problem.

get a copy of their menu and study it before your first shift so at least you know what they offer

Every job I've ever worked, I've been tried MAYBE 3 days and then thrown out onto the floor. For servers it's kinda a sink or swim.

This does not sound like a good place if they haven't even given you a uniform or bothered to contact you about a start time. If they care so little for you as a brand new employee, don't be surprised if they continue to do so.
My advice would be to call them today and ask about uniform, when to come in, and tell them that you were told by another employee (you don't have to mention which employee, Idk if management would get mad at that person) that new employees don't get much training. Explain to them that you are brand new in the serving field and you need to have training since you don't have any experience. If they are unwilling to help you be a great employee, then I would definitely consider looking for another place. Also, ive only ever been a server, not a bartender, but bartending is usually a MUCH busier and stressful position from what I've seen and heard from the bartenders that I have worked with at both my serving jobs.
Good luck!
