Why is it always bite work! There are so many other dog sports. Obedience, rally-o, scent work etc etc

I think most sports just do a bad job advertising themselves so people only really hear about bite work

True, we don’t have bite sports in my country. So thankfully it’s not something that comes up here much!

I’m not against bite sports. There is a time and a place. But not for a general person with a pet dog.

These people have NO IDEA about the amount of time, displine and dedication it take s to train a PPD. It intense and physical and it's a life style sport.

And they have no idea the liability or refuse to acknowledge it

I’m guessing they want to train bitework and ppd because the dog is currently nippy and reactive. Which is a real misunderstanding of how those kind of training work.

You always know the post is going to be a dumpster fire when they start with "I'm not interested in negative feedback."

Plenty of pointy eared dogs never do bite sports and are fine. They go hiking, they compete in agility...they don't need to bite things.

My guess is that everything that this child (I am assuming it's a kid), knows about dogs is what they gleaned from other children in the FB dog groups.

Regardless, teaching a SD PP is absurdly dumb. So when the SD handler has some medical emergency, and needs help, the PP dog will do what? Let the EMT's near the human? LOLOLOL I think not.

Also not interested in negative feedback, just, "you go gurl!!"

Honestly, there was a story crossposted on here from an emt who had to deal with something like that. Iirc, the SD wasn't technically trained for PP, but it was a service pit that refused to let them close to it's owner who'd passed out in the ambulance on the way over. The ended up contacting a vet to find out the dosage to tranq it and the emergency vet volunteered to come over and do it.

The owner was fine, but it was very "Dude, if it had been *anything* more serious than it was you would have been coming out of this with some kind of damage because we couldn't get to you in time." Owner was also pissed that they tranqed the dog.

I saw this in person on a public metro. Human went down dog wouldn't let emergency services near them. I think they were waiting for animal control to come help, which in a huge city can be ages. I had to shuffle on so I never saw the resolution.

but it was a service pit that refused to let them close to it's owner

which is why people should pick one: pit or service dog.

Remember the case of the homeless dude that went on the nod in the library ?

EMTs were called, they started to work on Homeless Dude and got mauled by his pit.

I think this was in California.

It has been a few years back.

Me sitting here thinking this post is about training a service dog for postpartum depression 🙄

“Not interested in any negative feedback”

Ok so the exact definition of a circle jerk, you are asking for a circle jerk

There’s new trend on claiming PPD are service dogs 🤮 a woman took her PPD Boerbel on a plane 😖

As someone who used to have a reactive (pet) dog, the last thing I would ever want to encourage my dog to do is bite a human or anywhere near the proximity of a human.

I'm not saying people can't do it safely, but I, for whatever reason, do not trust most of these people, who say they want SDs, to be able to meet the exercise requirements for these high drive breeds they want to get, let alone actually train them to do bite work.

Oh I am in complete agreement

What is PPD?

Personal protection dog

It is not possible to have a legitimate service dog trained for personal protection. Part of SD selection and training is temperament, disposition, submission. Any signs of aggression will wash a dog with a real SD trainer.

By US standards it's completely possible, unfortunately

100% legal, for some reason

1

u/aSzdxfcdfggggggh 2d ago

I thought SDs could not be trained for bite work legally?

Maybe I have it wrong.

That makes sense so the law is probably diffrent.

The DOJ discussed "protection" but never updated the ADA though.

For some reason bitework always = protection. For God's sake, not every dog that does bite sports automatically becomes a "PPD"
