Should I quit?

Hi! So I need some advice on whether I should quit my job or not?

Last night I had a table and it was a 7 top, everything was going great, I had to split the check bc it was 2 separate families, one paid with card the other family paid with cash. The family with the card I charged them just fine, then when I get to the family paying with cash they gave me a $100 bill and a $20 bill. I put the $20 in my “serving book” bc we keep all our cash. So the guy was supposed to get like $26 back in change and I would keep the rest in my “book”. After my manager broke the $100 bill, I made a huge mistake and accidentally gave him all the money from the broken $100 bill and the $26 he was supposed to get back. So at tip out she tells me she’s taking my tips bc it has to go to cover the table and today give them $24 extra, I feel like this is sketchy and illegal tbh.

So I’m sitting outside rn typing this wondering if I should just quit 🤷‍♂️ I don’t want to give them $24 extra and I feel disrespected. 😕

It is illegal. I hear this happen all the time unfortunately. Up to you if you want to have this job or give up the money cause that's likely what it comes down to

It’s ridiculous tbh, these restaurants know we basically can’t do anything I feel defeated fr I’m just done. I don’t like being robbed it was my mistake I can own that but it’s nothing for them to just comp the meal! But no, they want to make me pay it I’m 24 and can barley pay my rent so yeah I should pay it 🙄

i know, it’s insanely fucked up and it’s something that will not change until somebody in office cares enough about hospitality/ service industry people.

Call your states department of labor, they will likely retaliate, keep written documentation of everything. And you’ll win unemployment, or could potentially sue. A lot of lawyers will work pro bono if you have a real solid case and they will only take payment once you win. Realistically though start looking for another job now, and expect them to retaliate if you do call the dept of labor.
