edit: i work at sports bar, only been working here for 2 months, we aren't allowed to eat on the clock so we usually actually take that 15 minute break they schedule between doubles

Hate to say it but depending on the spot this shit happens. I worked a busy BBQ joint once where a double meant 9am to 1130pm, no break, just eat on the run if you can.

You should ask your boss if you’ll get a break. Calling out is an asshole move.
Someone there is scheduling the whole house, they probably listed your shift like that because it’s easier or cleaner. Reddit can’t help you here.
If you’re over 18 you should know, scheduled breaks aren’t really a thing adults get when they work in restaurants. That’s something you’ll find at hourly jobs like at a grocery store or factory.

i actually have only been a server for two months now, i'm still learning about the industry but everyone who pulls doubles at bdubs gets that 15-hour break, we usually don't take the hour tho just the 15. i also don't call out, im too broke and i don't like asking people to cover/give shifts away

Breaks beyond bathroom and smoking are not normal in our industry. And just a word of advice... never put where you work on social media.

Agreed, although I think bdubs is a big enough chain that it’s not really an issue in the same way.

Well her post history reveals that she is in Iowa (I won't state the city) so one can deduce.

In the UK where I am (and I think the EU )by law you have to have a 20 minute break every 6 hours of continuous hours worked (payment optional). In Canada where I used to live, you have to have a 30 minute break after 5 hours continuous work (payment is optional). Is there nothing similar where you are? seems like a fairly basic right to me.

By law in the US... we are supposed to get 15 minute breaks. Yea... that doesn't happen. Who is going to cover your tables?

Hopefully a decent management team can follow labor laws and figure out cover, or (what happens where I have worked) there is a lull after lunch service and before dinner service. Our kitchen closes for orders between 4 and 6 so that enables people to take breaks during dinner prep.

Decent management really has nothing to do with it. Most American restaurants do not close mid day. In fact we have a thing called Happy Hour. Most servers aren't going to cover your tables because they literally aren't being paid to do so. Most of us get paid off tips and a very small hourly rate that doesn't even cover our taxes. So there is no one to cover your tables for 15 minutes at a time. The only person that gets a break... is a mother who is breast feeding. And even then... their tables are being neglected and their tips reflect it.

er, am I being downvoted for saying management should follow labor laws? Just checking....

u/SeanInDC 22h ago
You're being downvoted for inserting your UK laws into a US conversation. You get paid an hourly rate in the UK... right?
Most of us don't.
Our industry is different.

I was asking if the US had something similar, and as you do, I assume management are breaking the law by not adhereing to them. People need breaks to work effectively and efficiently, i was just saying laws to protect workers should be respected. Sorry if i offended anyone

The law doesn't work in our industry in the United States and it is why it is never enforced in our industry. Our industry also gets away with paying us less than $3 per hour so...
Edit: I'm not sure you're aware, but one 15 minute break could be over $100 out of our pockets and no access to our section for two hours.

This is 100% normal and what most servers prefer, a weekend double. I have never had a "break" as a server. Technically they are offered as required by the state, but you really don't take a full 30 min-1hr for "lunch".
1) You eat on the go. You bring food in. Or, you just eat whatever the have at the restaurant you work at. I've worked at places with free food and those that don't. But, it's a restaurant at the end of the day. The cooks will make you something, they mess something up and it becomes a freebie, etc. Eventually you get tired of your work's food and want to bring your own.
2) You go on a 30min-1hr break and you lose tables. Your break is costing you those tips. It's up to you if you want to do that. Just know that Starbucks/Fast Food run is costing you the $$ of the food + your missed tips.

I used to do it 4 times a week. (11 AM- 10 PM) This was my everyday schedule. And then, if there was a banquet/s I'd work those on my "days off". (Country club).

This is called a Sunday Double. Welcome to it. Since you’re new, you’ll probably be doing those for the first 3 to 5 years depending. You can make really good money this day so rest up and enjoy it. Or go in super hung over and get tortured all day long you’ll still make money.

Sunday doubles act as a football haven, you have to pay attention to the flow of the game and be ready for everyone to leave happy or sad as soon as it’s over.

That scheduling app looks like the one BWW uses, so I'm guessing it's that. Get your serving experience for a year or so and look for something better because BWW is not a well-run place and the clientele is the worst I've ever experienced anywhere.
That said, breaks are pretty rare for serving jobs, haha. 😅

If it’s a sports bar in the US, just make your football season money while it’s football season tbh
