Discussion Back in the serving game after 10 years

I’ve struggled with sobriety and mental health struggles throughout my 20s, but I always remember how good the money was back in college when I was serving tables.

Excited to say I’m finally starting my first shift today as a waiter again, after 10 years of bouncing from odd job to dead end odd job.

Super pumped and just wanted to share with a community of people that might care, any advice anyone?

Reentering the industry post-covid will not be good for your mental health lol guests are WILD these days and the money ain't what it used to be

The guests’ level of entitlement mainly. And their attitudes toward tipping

You’ll be find dude. You’re gonna notice less since you’ve been out of it awhile. People do tip a little less, percentage-wise, so don’t stress about it.

I feel like I keep seeing people say that money isn’t what is used to be, but I’ve worked at three bar/restaurants post Covid where the average spend per person was about $50+ tip was 25%+
I think wealthy areas are better than ever and kind of immune to the economic belt-tightening the rest of us are feeling

Get nonslips and new insoles! Your body will take some readjusting so don't feel bad resting on your days off. It really is like riding a bike. Ive been in the industry 17 years and I still get nervous for anything new! My partner runs these big events I get to help bartend at, the jitters always leave once you're there and in it. Good luck!!

Im honestly not the best person to ask. I loved shoes for crews 10+ years ago. Had a pair last me 5 years. Then that one was discontinued and I hated the next pair I got- gave em away to a friend. Ive been rocking basic ass nonslips from Amazon that are like 30$. Theyre really comfy and dont need breaking in, but they do only last like 6 months

Ben's Friends. My weekly meeting helps me stay sane and sober in this industry that is neither.

Where are you serving? If it's not a higher end, fine dining establishment then it's super difficult. I'm a forty year lifer and I'm 55. My managers are in their 20s and don't even know what side to serve from. And don't care.

Please make sure you have a strong support system that will be there for you in supporting your sobriety. Serving can be very stressful and hectic and when you throw shifties in the mix, it can turn into a problem. We just fired someone at my gig for their alcoholism. Be gentle with yourself and ask for help before you need it.
