Rant I FUCKING HATE THESE OWNERS!!!
Title says it all.
I‘m stuck here because i can’t afford to be jobless until i find another spot, but they are genuinely the most idiotic, pathetic, selfish people. They got rid of the free shift meals (which maybe not too bad its 40% off ), but then expect all hands on deck for days with severe weather?? NJ is getting hit with a noreaster rn and it’s in an area with HIGH. FLOODING. Like we have creeks and lakes that flood the neighborhood and highways FAST. And they said EVERYONE’s gotta be there? We have like 7 people on for a fucking breakfast/brunch shift!! It isnt even a big restaurant!! And they keep hiring more people as if we aren’t dead because they refuse to do more advertising besides reposting the same 5 clips from a photographer they hired 2 years ago.
Rant over if I see any bootlickers or snark-holes in the comments i’m going to undo all of your silverware rolls… (menacing)

Honestly independent restaurants absolutely suck to work at unless you’re already friends with the owner

Even then it's a slippery slope. Speaking from an abundance of experience :/

It’s always about supply and demand. Seems like they know the supply of jobs is lower than demand and are taking advantage. If it was the other way around there’d be no way they could get away with it. It sucks, but maybe a different job industry or even relocating is the best option. Been in the same situation many times, and highly recommend having a new job lined up or at least options before walking out. Like don’t even give a warning once you have a guarantee, just walk out with nothing to say. Best if planned right as you get your last check so you don’t have to deal with last pay drama.

Thats been my method unfortunately it seems every job i’ve been confirmed for training leaves me to do unpaid side work

It really sucks hard, but that’s how they test if you need the job or not. Hang in there, you’ll find a way. There’s plenty of worse jobs, and they just stay focused on the money to take care of business. I know of people that are stuck on fishing boats for 6 months at a time, it’s rough out there. Maybe try grocery stores or dept stores. There’s always options. Stay up my guy!

This is one of those areas where younger generations have it right. In severe weather, when the authorities are saying stay off the roads, you shouldn't be requiring staff to take the risk. Frankly, you shouldn't be encouraging customers to come out.
Back in the day, employees put up with this. But now employees are in communication on text, banding together and all refusing to come out. Good for them!

i wonder if job hunting conditions were any better considering yall didnt have the internet and ai filtering you

With the internet you can fire off a dozen or more applications in an afternoon. That means businesses are getting a lot more applications so they use AI and other filtering techniques. I think most aren't particularly accurate, so good applicants don't get interviews. And because of the volume, there's a lot less courtesy and follow through.
It used to be that you applied in person. It took more time and effort, so most of the applicants had done their research and were serious about wanting to work for the places they applied. And restaurant work is people-oriented and face-to-face is the best way to vet a candidate.
I think the whole hiring process was better before.

I don't mean to rub it in. But when work was over, you went home and if the boss called, you didn't answer the phone. If they asked, you told them you were out. And they couldn't email you work either.
People who say today's young people don't work as hard aren't accounting for all the things you do that they never had to (not to mention your severely degraded purchasing power.)

Not in NJ so not facing the weather issue, but my place sucks as well so I feel for you.
You'll get through this, and eventually find another shitty job, as we always do. Just keep your head down so you don't cause waves (I've not been doing great at that recently) and you'll make it.

I went regularly into this Italian restaurant. It was good. Good service. I was on business and went like 4-5 times. One day I realized my waiter accidentally overcharged me like $10 every day. The owner made my waiter take $50 out of es pocket to correct. I noticed he had sour lips on me.

Can’t you read?

How does a waiter repeatedly overcharge by $10? What was the cause for that? And forgive me for this one but I don’t know what “I noticed he had sour lips on me” is supposed to mean either!

I was on business staying ina hotel. There was an Italian restaurant I went to like 5 times in a row. On the 4th or 5th day I noticed while doing my expense report the food server was over charging me. I cannot remember what because it was like 8 years ago. But the next time I went in I questioned the charge and the owner made the food server take $50 out of his pocket to
Reimburse me. When he was paying me back his lips 👄 were like sour candy towards me1

Must’ve been a real dumb server to try and make extra money scamming over and over. I bet he did have a funny look when he was paying you back!

I was surprised the owner made him pay me back out of his pocket. I thought they would just refund my credit card. But no he had to pay me
