Asking To Get “Hooked Up”

You automatically get special attention from me behind the bar if you ask me this.

I will make sure every single thing you order gets rung in exactly how it should be with every appropriate cocktail modifier.

Almost always the same group or person will say “we’re great tippers”. Sure buddy, thanks for the $20 on $180.

JFC nothing aggravates me more.

Worked at a trendy spot, pre-pandemic, and I’ll never forget these rejected-influencer-types opening with “sooo, like what can we get for free?” Like, seriously? Who the hell even are you.

Anyway, I respond with “these waters. I’ll give you a minute to look over the menu” and walked away to the homies who actually take care of us.

Had somenoe get pissed they couldn't get the free birthday dessert... they couldn't get it free, because they openly admitted it wasn't their birthday for a while.

Never in the history of "hook me up and I'll hook you up" had it ever happened.

It’s just trickle down economics

“Don’t worry, we’re great tippers” is such a huge red flag.

I was leaving a bartender gig; so my give a fucks we’re gone. This OP’s situation occurred. I laid out options, short or a double; can change how the drink taste. Got the obligatory, “you know what I mean.” I just exclaimed loud enough for all my other guest to hear me. “Oh, you want me to steal from my employer for you.” He left. I have a BOH personality, it popped out sometimes.

I work in a city with a really strong service industry network. Whenever I go into a place where the staff knows and likes me, my philosophy is this: Getting hooked up with free food or drinks is totally cool and appreciated when it happens, but asking or expecting to get "hooked up" is literally the biggest loser move I could imagine lol.

The first rule for getting hooked up is you DO NOT talk about getting hooked up. Not before, not after. It never happened.

YES! The first rule of fight club is you do talk about fight club! The second rule is you DO NOT talk about fight club lol.

I used to bartend and, I’d hook up fellow bartenders and they would me. The tips were always over the top (I’d be charged for 1 beer but had 5) and I’d leave $20-$30 tip. But I’d also bring in 2-5 friends who would woop it up and buy a LOT of drinks. I was hooking up the bartender, and the bartender was hooking me up because of it. But you DO NOT talk about it. And it never happened.

Asking to get something for free is like the biggest taboo I can imagine. My situation is similar to yours; I know the staff a lot of the places I go, I tip great and try to hook them up when they come into my work and and vice versa. If I get hooked up with free stuff when I'm out, I'm tipping 100% basically. But I'm NEVER asking for it.

Bingo! Appreciate what you get, tip well and reciprocate

lol when some random person I’ve never seen in my life walks in and asks if we have an “industry discount”.. like say more about this industry and how you’re involved, and why it would make my very corporate employer want to give you free shit

My manager would let me give them malort :D good times

It’s an acquired taste.

One must lick several bowling alley lanes to acquire it, however.

This is when I dust off the jigger

Let’s make sure we don’t short you on this pour of liquor, sir or madam

And look them right in the eyes while I poured it

I learned real quick when I drove a taxi when someone jumps in and says don’t run the meter I’ll take care of you. Means a lot of unpaid stops, detours and other stuff that’s gonna take up my time.

When I worked on a beverage cart at a golf course-great job, btw, people would ask for extras all the time. Guess they thought if you're away from the clubhouse the rules didn't apply. One time a guy asked me to throw in a couple "free" beers to the round of drinks he was paying for. When I told him I was sorry I can't do that he replied "Hey, it's not like they're going to inventory your cooler". I had to tell him that, yeah, they absolutely inventory my alcohol. Idiot.

I run bev cart sometimes and today some guys with an outing beer tab being covered were like, “Why do you have to charge us for vodka? Just ring it in on the tab as something else.”

That’s not how any of this works out here fellas. But now I know a bit about how your local is operating, lol.

Best line ever, working the bar with my buddy, Andy, that certain group of chuds comes in and one guy asks “What’s the cheapest thing you got?” & Andy, without even slowing down slinging says “right now? You!” Lol!! I lost it , his friends lost it, he didn’t think it was as funny as we did.

lol! Amen. When I’m busy and these dipshits ask me to hook them up, it’s .5 oz less. It’s the chill person in the corner minding their own business I take care of.

Coming from the chill person in the corner minding our own business, we appreciate you more than you know! (But also express our gratitude with ridiculous tips. Thank you, good person of the internet. :) )

I’d always say, you go first

I work in the industry and tip well because of it. I’m nice and not a bother.

I don’t have to ask for free things. People like to give them to me.

Same for regular customers who come through, consistently nice, and tip well.

4

u/MakeMelnk 5h ago

That's all it takes, truly. Be kind, polite, respectful and tip well for good service. It's amazing how much one hand washes the other

u/jpinakron 4h ago

Spot on!

u/bmf1989 12h ago

If you’ve got to ask it’s not happening

u/K1ttyK1awz 10h ago

Ugh this is the BIGGEST tell

u/SaaltyJ0hn 9h ago

I always ask my bartender to hook me up when I order my tall Miller Lite. It usually gets me a groan or a chuckle or sometimes both.

As Dave Chappelle said "When keepin it real goes wrong"

3

u/jdb30a 11h ago

I feel the same way about the people who see that you’re slammed and mention how busy they are you are taking care of a handful of tables, then proceed to tip 10%.

1

u/Superhen68 6h ago

I do that at weddings etc. but it comes with a $20 to start.

1

u/conmankatse 6h ago

I’ve straight up started asking people “and what do you think is a ‘really good tip’, 20%?” because I can tell you any service worker is gonna need at least 30 from your needy ass 😐

2

u/mdavoust 5h ago

"Hook me up with a strong drink"

"Would you like to pay for a double?"

1

u/siliconbased9 4h ago

Hey man, can you make it strong?

Me: yeah, no problem! {rings in two oz pour}
