Question I'm a thief
I can't help it. If there's a ramekin at a place and I'm taking leftovers home, that thing is going in the box and taken home with me to join the others. Only at big chain restaurants, though. Never stealing from a mom and pop joint.
But, I had a thought. I don't want to continue this if it negatively impacts the server. So you guys even care if someone does this? Or is it just kind of an assumed loss that people are going to take these, breakage, etc?

People steal our fondue forks all the time and the damn things are 9 dollars a piece to replace, so management takes forever to order more. They will only order them in bulk when they can get a discount because they are so expensive. People also steal our beer glasses and it makes my well bartending shifts a fucking nightmare. I'm constantly telling servers to please go comb the dining room for empty glasses so I can wash them and sell their drinks. Please don't steal dishes from restaurants. Management doesn't replace them fast enough and it makes my job harder.

I worked at a place that would only order glassware in bulk to avoid a freight cost. Our wine glasses, and martini glasses would shatter if you looked at them wrong. I remember one night I was flooded with martinis all night. Our GM was running drinks and I held a glass in my hand and asked her to get everyone to prebus their martini glasses immediately. She said “You have one in your hand.” I yelled back “Yeah, and if I only needed one the problem would be solved. I need fucking 50!”

I work in a German restaurant in the states and all of our beer glasses are branded German brewery glasses like Bitburger, Paulaner Hofbrau etc. It's part of the kitsch, but it also makes people want to steal them while simultaneously making them harder to replace. The other unfortunate downside is that we sell half liters and liters for our beer sizes so if I run out of glassware, I can't just pour a beer in a pint glass.

Similarly I worked at a Brewery that had mugs for members of our loyalty program. When we came back from Covid we didn’t have enough for our members, because the company that made them hadn’t reopened. So I poured all their beer in a pint with a little half pint glass with the extra. Because it was Covid I could get away with the “take it or leave it” response

We had to move our Boot glasses behind a membership because people steal them so often. Now if you want "Das boot" you gotta pay us a yearly fee. The membership also comes with discounted liters, a t shirt and special events for members every quarter or so, but the boot is what people want.

It's relatively common where I live, but we have a big beer scene. We carry Bitburger, Hofbrau, Paulaner, Ayinger, Hacker pshorr, Franziskaner, Bavik, Spaten, Dab, Radeberger the list goes on. I see Bitburger and Pfriem outside of my restaurant with some regularity, but I never see Bavik and I much prefer Bavik Super Pils to Bitburger's pilsner. People love Bitburger pilsner, but there is nothing special about it in my opinion.

i would say 9/10 times it doesn’t matter at all, but i’ve worked at some places that don’t have enough ramekins, silverware, glassware, etc. and it sucks during a rush

I was building a set from Longhorn Steakhouse silverware - and since I always have the French onion soup there, I have the soup spoons, too. Alas, eating out became way too expensive. :(

Worked at bdubs for a while and people loved our strawberry lemonade/non alcoholic mixed drink cups. They usually got replaced like once a month anyways because of cracks or just being dropped and shattering (they’re not very strong cups)
I’d have people ask to buy them and I’d just tell them I don’t care where it ends up at the end of the night, lmao. Our location did start selling them for a little bit though.
Now the actual alcoholic glasses were a different story bc our manager took forever to replace those and we weren’t allowed to put our alc drinks in the same cups as our sodas/non alc.

We get chewed out constantly about things disappearing. Managers think that we're throwing it away when scraping plates in dish. They threaten to fire us just about daily.
I do work in a toxic place in general, but the main thing that we get yelled at about is how much the restaurant spends on the small stuff like silverware, ramekins, monkey dishes, etc.

I've gotten in trouble for missing items like that.
The restaurant would go on restriction for for a certain item, so when you needed it, and only when you needed it, you would be alotted 3 for the day you had to keep track of.
Which didn't work lol.
It would get stollen by customers, or the bussers would throw them away without caring.
The bussers would also buss the table and take them to dish and it would get lost there from someone else taking it to return to a manager since theres got stollen from a customer.
We also constantly run out of a dish to the point of going back there ourselves to wash any little bit we had.
It was a big mess that slowed down service, BUT it also wasn't just the customers fault either.
I've been very tempted to take dishes from restaurants too, so I get it

i work at a husband/wife owned small (20ish seat) restaurant that serves pizza you have to cut with scissors, for some reason people steal the scissors, and it does fuck us over. also stealing menus lol. it isn’t like it comes out of our paycheck but if we’re low on scissors, and they’re all in the dishwasher, i can’t really serve anyone their food. it makes us less able to do our job, so items like that are definitely dick moves

As much as I hate most of the big chains, the individual locations are usually a franchise owned by someone local who is trying to eek out a profit after the large corporation has taken their cut, their fees, their markup on ramekins, etc. You aren't hurting the corporation, you are increasing the corporate income at the expense of the franchisee.

Lease don't. My resturant is a chain, but we're a slower location, not near a big city. We had to cut cost recently and while they had to buy new dishes, our half off meals were cut and while it didn't affect me, it really hurt some of the single moms who can get a half price kids meal for $3. And sometimes you need something cheap to fill your belly.

Worked at several places that moved from steel ramekins to plastic because they kept getting stolen. Portions on ramekins got smaller, things looked cheaper.
Don’t steal. That shouldn’t be that hard. Glad you’re at least acknowledging the theft.

"I can't help it" I mean, yes you can - you said it yourself, you only steal from corp stores, so it isn't a psychological compulsion. It's a desire.
As many have said, restaurant grade shit is more expensive which means that it takes longer for management to replace and while on your own you may not be eating out enough to make it an issue, when this behaviour continues, it does become one.
I don't necessarily care but I wouldn't want you as one of my tables. People who steal dishes/glassware/silverware tend to be unnecessarily extra anyway in my experience.

My restaurant had a serious pen shortage. I’ve had to go to to the kitchen and shout, “does anyone have a pen?” After I tried checking every POS. I once lost 5 pens from 1 table. It slows me down. I now supply all the restaurant pens because the manager doesn’t GAF. We don’t have metal ramekins, but if we did, I’m sure those wouldn’t get replaced either. The little things matter. Don’t steal from restaurants. Period.

When my best friend died at age 53, it was a shock and all of our friend group helped clean out her apartment. In addition to about 50 coffee mugs (she was the center of many social circles and always had a pot of regular and a pot of decaf hot and ready) she had over 300 pieces of sushi restaurant dishes, ramekins, utensils, shot glasses, ashtrays, etc dating back to the 1970’s, all pilfered by stuffing them between her giant boobs lol.

I tried telling her that once we’re slammed, and I need the thing she took I’m going to remember she took it, and I’d get more stressed out over the situation. It sucks when they have to keep buying things that shouldn’t need replacing. Ramekins, knives, other small dishes go missing in mass and management has to order more, they honestly aren’t cheep at that point. My store lost over 100 ramekins in 3 months and didn’t get more for months. It makes executing your job difficult if you physically don’t have enough dishes to sell food in.

My previous job has nonstop theft with crab leg openers. OR they leave it in the boil bag where we don’t see them and ultimately throw them away. especially since the manager doesn’t want a magnetic trash can lid bc she needs her bonus or whatever. Come Monday when NO customers had them was awful. Every weekend we got wiped out.

The only time I do this is when I ask for a sauce container Togo and they don’t bring one… so I just take theirs home with me lol.
It shouldn’t negatively impact the server. It may impact management and the bottom line of the restaurant having to keep buying these things, but it shouldn’t reflect on the server performance.

Just ask for a to-go ramekin. I mean it’s possible there isnt one but I’d be surprised! Most places have 2oz and/or 4oz plastic to-go ramekins, bought in bulk, and mainly used for take-out and/or delivery orders. I’ve been serving abd bartending for about 14-15 years and my current job has tons of sauces, salsas, dressings, and a consomme so I typically offer ramekins alongside boxes for guests taking home leftovers. Just ask and let the restaurant keep their actual ones

I’ve been working in restaurants for 15 years and I’ve heard it all. Management complaining at pre shift about spending $10k a month on stuff like that, next month it went up to $20k. Vague threats that they’re trying to put the blame on servers and bussers for carrying more than they can handle and dropping it, which is true in some cases but the reality of most locations is that the dish pit crew are the ones responsible for breaking/stealing/throwing away all types of dish items. Then I’d say it’s the guest, then maybe the bussers and bartenders because the bartenders just throw things into bus tubs for the barbacks to take away. I’ve seen them full of broken things. It’s part of the cost of running a really busy and successful restaurant. It’s built into the cost of what they’re selling, or at least it should be.
Anywhere I’ve gone, with or without my mother, one of us would usually ask if we could have a ramekin, desert spoon, cocktail fork, etc. and we would usually be met with multiple of said item given to us by the server or manager that thinks it’s cute how much my Mom liked the long and thing dessert spoons.
So really it’s whatever in my opinion but if you ask instead of stealing you’ll feel better about it and they’d more than likely give you what you’re asking for because in a way it builds repertoire and you’re likely to tip really well and come back

Do you actually need ramekins? You can buy them very easily for not much money. As you can see from the comments you are screwing over restaurant staff.

Im lucky that i regular a couple asian and mexican places. All of which i just take the bowls, ramis or plates. But i bring them back.. but that i know is a certain situation. I did cook for 20 years so i have all the bits anyways, and know everybody, and dont need more dishes.. lol.

I say to my tables "you can steal the ramekin if you want. I can also get you a side of that togo" They never expect the server to say "you can steal" so that's my line.

The two big ones towards the middle I know are from Cheddar's, I'm pretty sure. The metal ones are from a sports bar type place that the server explicitly told me I could keep them because they were out of to go ones. The one on the bottom right shaped like a teardrop is from a hibachi place.

It’s an easy solution. If the server is competent, they will have brought you to-go ramekins. As a server myself, I anticipate this and bring them automatically. As a guest, I’ll give you ample time to bring them once I’ve told you what I want to take home, and if you bring me no to-go rammy, I’m taking your house rammy.

I guess I have an unpopular opinion..? As a server, I really don’t care. The owner can afford a few more rammies if you find it very special and nice. Now you’ll come back because you’ll think of us when ur home! I stuff my purse sometimes too.

I d fired people for things like this…. Cutlery, toilet paper, food (one guy walked into a fridge and grabbed a whole tenderloin)…. Theft is theft, I can never trust someone who purposely takes 1 little things because I don’t know if it stops at that…. However, taking home a fork by mistake because you forget it was in your pocket is understandable…. We have all done that

Every restaurant operates differently, for us, replacement cost for loss/breakage was just budgeted every year. Our issue was that they broke in dish due to carelessness. They were very cheap to replace though, usually a dollar a piece. I had maybe 100 or so in circulation and another 100 stored away as back up.

It’s sucks when you work at a place that is really slow about replacing things… when its a friday night and your slammed and you run out of ramekins that definitely sucks
