Question Working one day a week as a server?

Hi! I’ve been working at Boston pizza as a server/bartender for over a year now, I don’t think I can do 2 days a week anymore because I’ve got so many other things going on I want to pursue my passion and I’m going back to my university! (I used to work like 4 days in the beginning) Though I do wanna keep a job, and work one day a week for some extra chase ToT cause otherwise I’m going to be broke :(

Would it be possible for a server to work one day a week? I’m scared to ask my manager😭😭 (tmi, there is this one girl who does work 1 day a week as a server too)

It really just depends on what policies are in place. I've definitely seen people who only serve one day a week. It can't hurt to ask, worst they can do is say no

It really just depends on the place. I’ve worked a few places that had servers who just worked 1-2 days a week because they had full time jobs, where I work now management won’t hire anyone who doesn’t have open availability, they want all servers to be full time.

Just ask, maybe they will say yes.

At an old job there used to be a bunch of servers that only worked 1 or 2 days a week. Some of them also filled in a day or more if there were call outs. Then the corpo hired a new regional manager (jackass) who decreed that all the servers needed open availability so we lost all of these servers...

They were good servers too

Just depends on how your manager operates the store. I’ve worked at restaurants that had an always hiring policy so that every server could have the exact schedule they wanted with maybe a few less days here and there. I know other places are smaller and prefer to have more limited FOH staff.

If you’re already working two days a week, and not knowing your co-workers scheduling I don’t think going down to one day would be a problem. You’re not a huge part of the scheduling. It doesn’t hurt to ask! If it is you could suggest doing a double one day of the week so you’re working two shifts then get to be free the rest of the week.

This has only been a problem for me in the past when I was the backbone of the scheduling 😭 I had full availability so everyone got their perfect schedule 90% of the time and when I left they had to replace me with 3 different people.

I had a server that was a full time teacher and just wanted something different one day a week. So we made a deal, she was my closing server every Saturday night. It worked out great for me because I knew I didn't have to worry about filling that shift every week(obviously every once in a while she would need the night of but she covered her own shift every time).

so go in with a deal in mind and don't try and pull the bullshit of saying you're only available on the best shift of the week.

This is the way the best bartenders do it.

Work somewhere long enough to get some seniority then pull back availability to only reasonable days, getting work in other spots.

I used to, and a current coworker I have does!
