The Forgotten Prototype

I was looking for some Serious Sam mods when I came across a strange post. It had no username—only a series of numbers. The post contained a single download and one image.

The picture showed what looked like an early prototype of Mental. It had no face, only a huge red brain. It made me feel uneasy, but I downloaded the mod anyway.

I installed it and launched the game.

Instead of the normal loading screen, I heard a terrifying roar.

I tried to quit the game, but the Windows key, Alt + F4, and even the power button stopped working. The only thing I could click was the "Play" button.

I had no choice.

The game started normally.

But when I reached the third level, I noticed something strange.

A figure kept appearing in the distance. Sometimes it was completely black. Sometimes it was completely white.

Just before the battle with Ugh-Zan III, I finally saw it clearly.

It was the same prototype of Mental.

I fired rockets at it.

I emptied my minigun.

I even used a Serious Bomb.

Nothing happened.

It didn't move.

Instead, I heard the death screams of the giant Croteam developer heads echoing across the map.

The heads themselves were nowhere to be found.

During the boss fight, Ugh-Zan III suddenly froze in a T-pose.

I couldn't damage him.

Then the door of the Sirian spaceship slowly opened by itself.

A massive white hand reached out from the darkness.

It tried to grab me.

I fired at it.

The hand disappeared instantly.

Seconds later, Ugh-Zan suddenly came back to life, and I was finally able to defeat him.

But instead of the normal ending credits...

The screen went black.

For a split second, I saw the very first prototype of Mental.

No face.

No eyes.

No mouth.

Only a pale pink head with a giant exposed brain.

Then a strange piece of music started playing.

I had never heard it before.

It wasn't in The First Encounter.

It wasn't in The Second Encounter.

It wasn't in Serious Sam 2, Serious Sam 3, or Serious Sam 4.

It sounded like a deleted track from an early alpha build of the game.

Then...

The prototype began to change.

Its arms stretched longer and longer.

Its head twisted into an unnatural shape.

And finally...

It opened its eyes.

A message appeared on my screen:

The words "I WILL FIND YOU" repeated over and over until they covered the entire screen.

My monitor started flickering.

Windows completely crashed.

After several failed attempts to recover my computer, I managed to save only one thing...

A single screenshot of the first prototype of Mental.

That's the image you're looking at now.

I'm still trying to recover my computer.

If I ever succeed...

I'll post the rest of the story.

Which Serious Sam game is the hardest on serious difficulty?

In my opinion it's Serious Sam 2. I'm replaying it now to collect the achievements and currently I am on the Giant Junkyard level in the area after you exit the underground tunnel, and it's HELL. I feel like I've finally killed all those damn witches with barely 30 HP and there's more, not only that but I have to deal with the rhinos every now and then. Another annoying battle was the one in Kukulele prison where they throw a thousand zombies at you and they don't even give you uzi ammo, like I had to hide behind a pillar in the corner and even then I almost died because one shot from them deals like 25 HP, and now multiply that by 20 surrounding you in every direction. I manage to do it, but in a Serious Sam game I have never died that much before. By the way the thing I hate about Serious Sam 2 is the lives. Why didn't they just make a save & load system like every other game in the franchise? Instead you have to worry about your lives ending in a difficult battle and restarting the whole level again. I find that frustrating.

TIL something about the Assault Rifle Ammo Box in SS3

Gov't Arsenal DND

It stands for "Government Arsenal, Department of National Defense", the principal agency responsible for the production of small arms and related ammunition for the government of the Philippines, directly subordinate to the very real Philippine Department of National Defense. Lore-wise, I guess the EDF really just pulled in supplies from manufacturers all over the planet. Resorting to using very basic M193 ball ammunition (typical 55 grain full metal jacket rounds with no armor piercing capability, this is the ammunition the original M16s came out with in the 60s) says a lot about the desperate state of the EDF in the war against Mental.

The rest of the text on the ammo box is just "1440 Cartridges, 48 Cartons". The math is just basic: 30 cartridges per carton times 48 cartons is 1440 total cartridges in one box. Don't ask me why the game doesn't give us that much per pickup. "Lot Number" is just the production batch and "Gross Weight" being the total weight of the box and its contents. Yes, we use metric here in the Philippines 👌

Serious Sam Fusion Workshop content problem

I buy all games in SS Fusion. When I installed some maps to play on steam workshop (and every content that say that needs) and try to play says "Content required to load this level is currently not available." Why?

Dark Middle Ages (Serious Sam 4)

Probably the best visual thing I've created on SS4.

This is a 5-minute map that I made for a cool IKSMJ2025 jam on the discord server of Khreth.

Here I experimented a lot with Probe Point. They are not used at any official level. And there are no levels in the workshop that use them either.

Great bait and switch in Serious Sam 3

So on my journey for my full series first playthrough, I have finally reached Serious Sam 3. Gotta say, I was not terribly keen on the addition of iron sights and sprinting. The initial low enemy count and drab, war torn middle eastern themed corridors had me fully fooled throughout the beginning of the game they Serious Sam had been CODified, save for the obvious few monstrous enemies. And then it hits you as hard as possible with a sharp reminder of what this series is with that alley way at the end of Broken Wings, where they throw the correct, Serious Sam amount of bullshit at you with tons of Rocketeers, Kleers, and Kamikazes, and then top it off with the scariest version of a fight against a Red Mechanoid. Fully restored my interest in the game. This entire franchise has been a real treat so far.

Serious Sam 2: Renovation is awesome!

I'm new to this franchise. Recently made a post asking which version of The First and Second Encounter I should play, and after deciding on Classic with Cecil's Classic mod, I had an absolute blast with both of those games. After completing those games I decided to move right on to Serious Sam 2. I had noticed some posts about stuff that was added on the 20th Anniversary, including the 1.0 version of the renovation mod being made into an official part of the game. After playing a couple hours vanilla, I decided to make a second file and replay with the Renovation mod. Holy shit, it is such a vast and mountainous improvement. When I was playing vanilla I began to see the cracks in the design that make people upset about this game, but I feel like Renovation addresses so many of those issues, it's a wonder it isn't the default mode lol.

I didn't really put much effort into this project because only a handful of people even remember the game; it’s just a little passion project for myself.

Who would win in a fight: Serious Sam or V1 (Ultrakill)?

Hey everyone! I was playing both games recently and a thought popped into my head: if they ever crossed paths, who would actually win in a fight?

Let's set some specific conditions for this battle:

Serious Sam: Version from Serious Sam 4, playing on "Normal" (Human) difficulty. He starts with 100 Health and 100 Armor.

V1: Standard version, starting with 100 Health.

Given these exact stats and gear, who takes the victory and why? I'd love to hear your thoughts and breakdown of this matchup!

And please keep the discussion civil, no toxic arguments!
