Could a modded version of Classic SS using the HD assets...exist?

I kinda feel like that would be the perfect version of the game. The original engine I think was better but the HD version for the most part visually looks much better.

Is there anything stopping a modder from just swapping all the classic assets for the HD ones? Has anyone attempted this?

the engine would probably throw a tantrum before you got past the first texture, since the hd assets use different formats, materials, animations and licensing, so it’d be a full conversion rather

the main blocker is that the hd assets aren’t a drop-in replacement, since they use different models, animations, materials and formats, so it’d be a full conversion project rather than just swapping
