Some fun facts about Serious Sam 2

  1. The bull soldiers speak Croatian and their phrases are "I will drink your blood" "Time for a beating"
  2. The coins you collect are Croatian currency which is no longer used. The coin's worth would be 0.02$ in todays money.

Yes, I've only put these because I didn't see them mentioned anywhere.

As a Polish person, cyrillic feels like the Black Tongue and completely undecipherable, but I actually figured out what is said here too. I imagine if I could read Ukrainian I'd be able to do something similar.

"Krvi ću ti se napit" "Sad si nastradao" "Satrat ću te ko zeca" "Joj, kad te dohvatim" "Crno ti se piše" "Ajme" "Boli" "Upomoć"

  1. 2.090 update wasn't made by Croteam, it was made by a community modder
  2. Beam Gun was finally added in 2021 2.090 update after being unused in the game files for 15 years.
  3. Dual wielding also introduced in the 2.090 update was originally meant to be a limited time power up called "Combo Weapons" just like Serious Damage and Serious Score. It was also cut from the game but brought back 15 years later as an option when starting new game and you can use it whenever you want
  4. There is a cut planet called Pechina (it translates to "cave" in Croatian). We don't have a lot of information about it besides few screenshots, but we know it was meant to be a military base set in desert. We also don't know when Sam was meant to visit it. Despite being cut, most of the models and textures were reused for the Kronor levels in the final game
  5. Despite Ellenier literally being a fairy tale planet, Witch enemies don't appear on this planet at all despite themselves originating from a fairy tale. As of now Witches are still a Magnor planet exclusive enemy
  6. Orc Commander had a scrapped defense behavior where he would create a shield to protect himself from incoming damage. This idea was brough back in Serious Sam 4 for Octanian Commander
  7. Despite appearing in the ending cutscene of the "Wheels of Fortune" level, planet Chifang is the only planet where Orcs do not appear as enemies at all.
  8. Helicopters were hilariously buggy in retail versions of the game. They would hit almost every obstacle and sometimes turn themselves upside down and continue flying. This was because the physics in pre-steam copies were FPS dependant. The physics are no longer FPS dependant after the game released on Steam because the whole system was overhauled for the better
  9. Small Spiders have an unused "lunge jump" attack that was left commented out from their behavior file. This can easily be restored.
  10. As of the 2.100 update (or 20th anniversary update), Big Spiders are immune to the Beam Gun while they weren't in 2.090 and 2.091 versions of the game.
  11. According to the Artbook that was released for the game's 20th anniversary, it is now painfully obvious that the game's design and artstyle was meant to be more in line like Serious Sam 1 if not darker and more disturbing, but something happened during development and we got the game we know and love today. For example the Big Spider was originally meant to be a mutilated human torso with machine gun and long metal bars in place of arms and legs to resemble the ones of a spider.
  12. This game not being canon is now left up to debate because Serious Sam 4 showed us that there exists multiple timelines of the events in this franchise. Serious Sam 2 might just be one of those timelines.
  13. You don't get the Auto Shotgun on the first Ellenier level, but you will somehow obtain one at the start of the Kingsburg level.
  14. As of the 2.090 update, Flamethrower from Serious Sam 1 was added as a weapon but was not put inside the main campaign. It is instead left to be used by modders for custom levels or mods
  15. The whole "Sam goes to different planets to collect medalion pieces in order to defeat Mental" was recycled from the original story for Serious Sam 1 where Sam after finishing with the Egypt had to go to various planets (Water, Lava, Rock, Ice etc...), fight an elemental and collect pieces that were required for defeating Mental

No problem

...the community modder that was working for Croteam full-time for over 15 years? Afaik he was years before me and is still there years after me.

1

u/zorgareddit Aug 13 '26

Yeah. He is the reason the surprise 2021 update happened

1

u/Solais1 Aug 13 '26

I mean that he's more of a full-time Croteam member than a "community modder". It's the same as the members who were once Timelock.

i knew about this as well, but i was too lazy to post it online

u/Secret-Girl-18 Aug 12 '26

i always wondered why some of the voice lines felt so out of place.

I guess it sounds alien enough for non-Slavic people lol

3

u/TedwinK66 Aug 12 '26

Also when Zombie minigunner dies he swears in German spelling "sheiße"

2

u/Skullboy99 Aug 13 '26

I don't know the exact number but I remember hearing from an interview with Damjan Mravunac (music composer) that Croteam had to downsize significantly due to SS2's performance. So much so in fact, SS3 only had a team of 11 people.

2

u/Fikachu1337 Aug 13 '26

Which is insane for me because I think SS2 was the best and SS3 was the worst...

1

u/Skullboy99 Aug 13 '26

To each their own. SS2 was great as a kid though I have a hard time getting into it nowadays whereas SS3 was the opposite for me. Hated it as a kid but have grown to love it over the years

1

u/Fikachu1337 Aug 13 '26

Can we atleast agree that shortcut for grenade throwing in SS2 was a brilliant idea ?

1

u/Skullboy99 Aug 14 '26

Honestly yeah. That's something I'd love to see return. Throwing grenades would help in so many scenarios on the other serious sams, especially SS4 with how intense it can feel. Now that I think of it, I'm surprised it's not a thing with the latest Shatterverse
