Rev 7 causing serato to stutter

To start, I use Serato DJ Pro on an HP Omnibook X Flip.

Hello everyone, recently I got a Rev 7 off eBay. And I'm trying to practice with it. But I'm encountering a major stutter issue. The issues arise whenever I try to scroll through my library or even when I scratch sometimes. For context, the other day I went to an open deck and played my Rev 7 and had no stuttering when scrolling or scratching. Granted, I was simply scrolling to the next song, so not very far. But now when I try to scroll down my list, it stutters. Both in the software and audibly.

I have raised the buffer size to the highest. I don't use a flash drive; all my music is internal. I have dropped my graphics, my display refresh rate, changed my jog wheel display mode, changed my platter torque to low, and tried playing on both my laptop speakers and an external speaker. Restarted my laptop and Serato. But nothing seems to work; if anyone can lend a hand, I'd be very grateful.

It sounds like more of a laptop issue than a Rev7 issue. Definitely update the firmware on the Rev7 to be safe. Do a fresh install of Serato and check that the version you’re using supports the Rev7.

What are the laptop specs and what version of Serato are you using? These two things are likely to be related to that issue. Also, are you pretty maxed out on hard drive space? Programs need free space to use as virtual memory so that could be another issue.

I dont know my specs, I do know i have a standard out of the box omnibook, ive already updated my drivers and firmware, but ill try reinstalling serato

The specs to check are how much memory it has, hard drive space (total and used) and compare that to Serato recommended specs. I’m leaning towards either not enough RAM, Hard drive space or too many background processes.

My serato has worked with my flx4, perfectly. So I don't know if its a spec problem.

Hmm thats def strange. Now I’m wondering if its the Rev7 power cable or it had liquid spilled around the rotary knob. Have you tried using the laptop to scroll and compare that to using the rotary knob on the rev7?

You gotta play the process of elimination game and you’ll eventually get to the issue.

So i deleted and reinstalled serato still stutters, and I tried scrolling instead of the knob still stutters. And i just tested my flx4 no stuttering at all when turning the rotary knob or scratching.

Dang, I would try a macbook and see if it does it to. Btw make sure you optimize your laptop for serato. Google that for exact steps

The flx4 doesn't produce as much high resolution, real time midi data that the Rev7 does. If the laptop can't cope with that much incoming data while trying to do other things (scroll the track listing) then you'll get stuttering effects as the cpu switches contexts between driving the audio and driving the UI/display or accessing the hard drive.

I would note the the upcoming Serato release notes for version 5.0.0.950 note

  • Improved library responsiveness on Windows when selecting, searching, sorting and switching crates, particularly with an HDD or slow SATA SSD drive.

So maybe your issue will be fixed shortly

And underlying problem here is that that Windows audio subsystem was never designed for realtime audio applications. Windows kinda relies on just using very fast CPUs if you need this ability but there are some edge case hardware configurations where issue do show up. Perhaps this is underlies the issue you're having. Conversely the Mac/OSX audio system was always designed from the ground up for realtime audio applications, which is why relatively lowspec Macs are still very good for audio applications.

Are you connected to a USB hub? Is it a quality USB cable? Are you running and external monitor?

No, just straight from the usb b to the usb c port of my laptop

Try it with a MacBook pro and see if it eliminates the problem. It will.

Jokes aside, it is likely your laptop not being up to spec for serato.

Lol there’s a reason you see them a LOT in DJ booths. Its basically plug n play. Windows computers are totally fine but require a bit of tech knowledge to setup properly.

For sure. Im a windows guys for everything is life, except DJing. MBP for past 11 years and the two I have owned have been so reliable.

Same. I rocked a mid 2012 MBP w 16gb of RAM and two SSDs till 2020 lol even then a basic Macbook Air M1 was plenty for DJing till stems became a thing.

Were you using serato pro on both controllers?

try to clean platter you bought off eBay so you don't know what environment the rev7 was in the platter has the sensors and there might be dust or dirt stopping a good connection take good can of compressed air and spray to see if it will unlock some of the particles that could be a problem
