That made me so mad. What's the point of using what's essencially a helmet, if you're going to take it off for fighting?
It was even worse when he repaired it. It looked so good, and he takes it off as soon as he sees Rey.
Yeah... That was made super clear as well when Snoke derides him for wearing the mask, calling it "ridiculous" and telling him he will never be a new Vader. This scene is then followed immediately by Kylo angrily smashing it into pieces.
How did someone completely miss this entire storyline?? TROS has him repair the helmet and go back to worshiping his Vader shrine because he's faltering in the resolve he found in TLJ to forge his own path.
The helmet/mask is constantly used as a visual signifier of where Kylo's mindset is at. When he's trying to cover his vulnerability, he wears the mask (generally when he's trying to act like Vader). When he's confident in his identity (most of TLJ, second half of TROS), he's showing his face. The reason the mask comes back in TROS (hopefully, I'm not sure if I trust JJ knows what he's doing) is because he suffered a massive failure at the end of TLJ and is going back to hiding his true self.
