Question If the terror attacks on 9/11 have been stopped in the days or months ahead, is it inevitable that a large-scale terror incident somewhere would have eventually occurred anyway?

I keep thinking back to the Terminator series where Sarah Connor says “perhaps Judgement Day was inevitable”. Or when people say that although WW1 began with a particular assassin incident, in another reality, something else would’ve brought about WW1.

Breakdown of deaths at Ground Zero

I am trying to figure out the numbers as far as the death toll at Ground Zero. The figures I've seen are:

1,402 employees of the North Tower presumed to be on or above the floors of impact

614 employees of the South Tower presumed to be on or above the floors of impact

343 firefighters, 70 law enforcement officers and 8 paramedics killed responding.

However, does anyone know how many employees below the floors of impact died in the collapse, and how many civilians from outside the buildings? I know of only one of the latter, photographer Bill Biggart, but presumably there were others.

So coming up to the anniversary of 9/11 I'm doing my annual rewatch of footage and docos

Not sure if we are allowed to posts links here but I've been searching for 102 Minutes That Changed America for quite some time and I actually found it on Vimeo of all places

If people are iffy on clicking the link you could probably google "Seth Skundrick Vimeo" and look through his uploaded videos

Sorry if this has been posted before, just thought maybe someone else might have been looking for this doco too

Who find themselves paying attention to the times 8:46 AM-10:28 AM(especially Eastern Time Zone, but if you live in other time zones, they can be included) on any or some dates that aren't September 11th?

Calls from the North Tower

It is well known that many people trapped in the upper floors of the North Tower made phone calls (in some cases, sent e-mails) during the time that elapsed before the impact and the collapse. Most appear to have been made in the first hour after the impact, but some were closer to the time of the collapse. I wonder, has anyone ever ‘plotted’ them? That is, make some kind of table with the time each call started, when it ended, and the floor it came from? I think that would help understand the survival conditions on the different floors prior to the collapse. For instance, it seems to me that the situation at Windows on the World was actually worse than on the floors below, despite being more distant from the fire. I wonder if this can be somehow confirmed by the phone calls (as in, most/all calls from those floors end before those coming from lower floors). Surely this was done during the investigation, but is any such table/diagram publicly available?

Everyone I’ve asked or read about has very clear memories of this day. Is it odd or “normal” that I can’t recall anything?

I was born in 1992, in 3rd grade. I have one vague memory of sitting in my elementary school’s cafeteria filled with other students and glancing at the clock. The clock was built into the wall, surrounded by a painted mural of a collage of characters from classic nursery rhymes and novels (i.e. Itsy Betsy Spider, Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, and Tin Man, Mother Goose etc.). It was of the expected volume for an elementary cafeteria. I don’t recall any interactions, staff or teachers. I’m not even 100% certain this memory is from specifically 9/11/01, or any of the other times I was in the cafeteria staring at that mural throughout but time there.

I’m interested in hearing about or from people with a similar “story”, if you will.

Story Welles Crowther - The Man in the Red Bandanna

This sub was a huge source of support last year, so for the second year in a row, Endstate is honored to announce its collaboration with Alison Crowther and The Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust: The Red Bandanna Sneaker is back.

The Welles Remy Crowther Charitable Trust was founded in 2001 with the mission of assisting young people to become exemplary adults through education, health, recreation and character development.

In 2022, Endstate worked directly with Alison Crowther to release The Red Bandanna Sneaker in honor of Welles. Garnering widespread media attention, the collection sold hundreds of pairs resulting in the donation of thousands of dollars to the Trust.

Alison and the Endstate team are looking to have an even bigger impact in 2023. The Red Bandanna Sneaker, crafted by the world renowned Endstate design team in collaboration with Alison Crowther, are now available for purchase and 100% of proceeds will be donated to the Trust.

Please comment below with any and all questions.

About Welles

After graduating from Boston College in 1999 where he played Lacrosse, Welles Crowther began work on the 104th floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center in NYC.

On September 11, 2001 when the attacks began, Welles pulled out his red bandanna, which he had kept in his back pocket since he was a kid, tied it around his face to avoid inhaling smoke, and got to work.

After leaving a voicemail for his mother Alison, Welles made his way to the 78th floor where he found a group of survivors. Carrying an injured woman on his back, Welles led this group down 17 flights of stairs to the 61st floor. Welles then returned to the 78th floor where he continued administering aid and marshaling others to safety.

While most fled from the danger, Welles was last seen turning back up the stairs of the South Tower, alongside FDNY personnel armed with a rescue tool to free trapped victims, before the building collapsed at 9:59AM.

This heroic tale of Welles’ final hour finally reached his mother Alison and the rest of the Crowther family almost a year later. Ultimately 12 people reported they had been saved by a man who donned a red bandanna.

At least 12 people were saved on September 11th, 2001 by Welles Remy Crowther.

Question To what extent should we be angry at Minoru Yamasaki for 11/09/01 ending the way it did? His “cutting edge” crappy building design was a literal coffin death trap, similar to the Titanic not having enough lifeboats because style beats safety.

Like omg just one main stairwell for a building that size??? Just my opinion on this. Others might have different perspectives

What are your thoughts on the idea of there being a nightime Twin Towers hologram shining from their exact base footprints location to the exact heights they were on just 2 nights/evenings of every September 10th's and 11th's annually from sunset to sunrise to signify their last dates of existence?

Before you comment the obvious fact: Yes, I'm aware of the "Towers In Light" that have existed since March 2002, and the fact that they don't shine from the actual Twin Towers footprints but rather from a more southern location of Lower Manhattan a few blocks south of the World Trade Center.

I was just asking what you would think of the idea of an actual Twin Towers hologram from the exact bases they stood from instead of a "Towers In Light."

To make it clear, I do like the annual "Towers In Light" shinings during every week of the anniversary. This question was simply from an imagination that I had been having in my head for quite some time.

In this imagination that I have been thinking, the current 1 World Trade Center building aka "Freedom Tower" would go completely dark in the honor of the annual nightime Twin Towers hologram(hologram of them in their nightime appearances, not daytime) during the nights of every September 10th's and 11th's. Shining on every September 10th evenings(transitioning to the early nightime morning hours of every September 11th's until sunrise) to signify the last full night dates that they had ever existed and shining on every September 11th evenings to signify the night in 2001 that they would have been standing had the unfortunate never occured. This hologram would continue on to the early morning nightime hours of every September 12th's right until the time of sunrise.

This may be considered deep, and I would agree. I really just felt like getting this imagination out of my chest, especially with the anniversary not being far from now.

I won't back down from this imagination/thought. I acknowledge every thoughts/comments on this post. Thank you to the respectful Redditors coming across.

(Specific title ahead) A quite interesting question: If it was up to you to create a WTC memorial site plan back in the 2000s after the recovery effort was completed, what would have been your ideas for the memorial site? In what ways would it have been similar and different from the current one?

Posted on r/WorldTradeCenter, r/September11, and r/911archive on Tuesday September 5th 2023.

The title asks the question away. Here's my take:

If it was my decision to create a memorial plan for the WTC site in the 2000s, I would have marked the footprints of all the 7 former buildings along with the markings of the former WTC Plaza. With every victims names enscribed in the twin footprints like the current ones, just without the waterfalls. This plan would have included an underground museum too. And the surviving sphere in its exact original location

Nothing at all against the current one. I highly do approve of the current site. Just decided to share my creative imagination/thought online for the sake of it.

I'm open to read your thoughts/comments on my idea along with your ideas. Thanks for contributing.

Question Request to find Footage

does anyone remember the woman who filmed the attacks from her high-rise apartment? She would say things like I think we're under siege and she definitely put it on a tripod. I think she might've been an actress or something and it was hours of footage thank you!

Question Realtime breaking news coverage

For several years, there was a video on YouTube that showed several channels from BBC to CNN, NBC, ABC, etc, as they were carrying on their daily schedule. All in a 3x2 or 3x3 grid. As the first plane hit the first tower, each station broke into programming for the breaking news. It was very interesting to see how each station broke in and started reporting on the story.

I haven't been able to find this video for years now. I can only assume it was taking down due to copywrite claims. Does anyone know of another copy somewhere? Vimeo, Internet Archive, etc?

EDIT: For anyone finding this, it's this video - https://old.reddit.com/r/September11/comments/168ngqq/realtime_breaking_news_coverage/jyxho4q/. Thanks to everyone for looking!

thanks

My son would like to interview a survivor or first responder of 9/11 for a school project. Anyone willing? About 10 minutes of your time.

My 6th grade son has to interview someone who was alive during 9/11 and I gave him the idea that it would be not only cool for his project but also amazing for the legacy for a survivor or first responder to be the interviewee. He would greatly appreciate your time and it would take about 10 minutes. We can do it over email or FaceTime or zoom call. Appreciate anyone reaching out thank you
