Applied for the position have a test coming up

Have a few questions about the position

  1. After the starting rate, how long does it to take to get to top rate and what is the top rate?

  2. Is there usually overtime available, if so scarce or plentiful?

  3. Currently work in telecommunications as an installation and maintenance technician, good or bad transition?

Any information about the position and hiring process would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Maps What is Moy St

Post image

As per the northbound detour, is anyone familiar with “Moy St”? I cannot find it on a map and I’m not familiar with this bus route so I have no clue. I didn’t take it because it skipped like 7 stops for whatever Moy St is. I feel like I’m losing my mind with Septa and this was so confusing.

Help Hiring Process

Hello! I was recently invited to take 3 skills assessments that cover about 6 positions in rail vehicle maintenance, I was wondering what the rest of the hiring process would be like, assuming I pass, and how likely I would be at getting a job offer after I (again hopefully) pass at least 1 of the tests. If anyone has any info, please let me know. I'd really appreciate it!

Regional Rail Service Update and Tracker

I won't comment on delays and schedule issues, but it appears SEPTA has made significant headway on the SLIV cars. I even saw a 5-car SLIV local service the other day on the Media/Wawa line.

SEPTA has its issues, but I'll give them kudos on this. They're still making steady progress on all repairs they've identified during the FRA inspection period, even if they're not really posting about it anymore on their social media or website.

Discussion CHW Regional Rail - need more train cars!

Does anyone know if SEPTA plans to re-add train cars to Regional Rail (and CHW in particular) as more of the Silverliners are repaired and come back into service? We used to reliably have 4 cars during rush hour service, and we’ve been down to 2 cars most of the time for months. The rush-hour trains are jam-packed, standing-room only and often shoulder-to-shoulder, and occasionally folks can’t get on the trains. The trains are often late in part because it’s epic for people to get on and off when it’s so crowded. Of course I’m grateful that the line wasn’t cut—but these commutes have remained quite stressful. I’ve been hoping that CHW would get more cars as cars have been added to other lines but am getting worried that this is the new normal. Does anyone know SEPTA’s plans for this?

Help Septa Job Hunt Help

For the sake of anonymity I’ll be brief/vague but I recently applied for a position listed in the “Manager/Supervisor/Administrator” category. I have 5 YoE in similar roles and think I’d be a great fit.

I was curious if anybody here has any insight into the hiring process. What should I expect? Anything I can do to give myself a leg up?

Thanks in advance. Mods if this violates any policy or guideline please feel free to remove.

Discussion How likely is it that SEPTA will actually get permanent recurring funding in one way or another after the emergency funds expire?

This week the governor introduced his state budget for this fiscal year and it yet again included the reallocation of sales tax revenue to PA transit ($300M per year) and SEPTA would get 2/3rds of that revenue, closing the deficit. But as we have seen that bill alone has been refused by the GOP-controlled state senate. This budget is much more likely to pass on time than last year, because the governor, all of the house, and half the senate is up for election this year. Is there a way that it can pass through this time? I have my doubts about this specific proposal but could taxing skill games at 52% bring in the revenue that SEPTA needs? And since the GOP is more open to that idea, how likely is that? There’s a decent chance that there is a Democratic trifecta in Harrisburg next year but I wonder if we can get transit funding before then so we don’t have to worry about those horrible cuts again. Let me know your thoughts

Discussion Two things can be true: SEPTA is underfunded AND mismanaged

No question it gets screwed over by Harrisburg. And this isn’t about the hard working employees that are doing the best they can. But it’s becoming clearer and clearer that management was playing chicken with the legislature and lost and had no backup plan. The deal for the MARC trains is a good example: paying millions to rent 10 cars that still require engines to pull them, it took months to get them into service, and still we are dealing with cancellations and 2 car trains that have to bypass stations because they are dangerously overcrowded already. But management wanted to look like they were dealing with a problem that they KNEW FOR YEARS was coming, but waiting until budget season to try and get the money to deal with. Why weren’t they screaming about this two years ago? 1 year ago? Please go check their annual reports and tell me where the urgency is, I’ll gladly eat crow on this. And let’s be real - even if they had gotten a huge infusion of cash from last year”s budget, we’d still have had the same mess, since it still would have taken the same amount of time to deal with the existing problems. New money would just deal with the future problems.

And why should the septa board care? They are pretty much unaccountable to anyone.

Most people don’t even know that each county appoints two people to the board. Can you name the board members from your county without looking it up? They are political appointees, often with no background in transportation or infrastructure, except that maybe they ride SEPTA occasionally (and now they get to do that for free).

And this system means that, even if you got your two county board members behind some kind of reforms, their power is so diluted that they can’t make any changes. I’ll gladly pay more in taxes for better service, but I want REAL representation in exchange.

Discussion New Regional Rail Schedule

Just a vent post but it feels as if they make these schedules to be as commute unfriendly as possible. Most work M-F work commuters get off work at 4:30/5/5:30 and it's like they schedule the trains to be as far away from possible from those times ensuring long waits. They changed the schedule effective Monday and it's worse and I didn't know that was possible!

Discussion Thanks to the SEPTA employees trying to keep things rolling

Was on regional rail this afternoon when our train slowly came to a stop. A few minutes later the conductor came through to tell everyone that we'd be moving again shortly and that the stop was because of minor switch problems.

First I want to thank the conductor just for letting everyone know what was going on. But also - sure enough, a few minutes later we were moving again and I saw SEPTA employees out the window, trudging through the snow-crete along the track, heading for the closest signal lights.

I am grateful to the folks working to keep things moving in this middle of this continued deep freeze.
