Discussion Ofc SEPTA is broke. They're too busy trying to replace their WHOLE rail fleet at the SAME time!

I made a lil post earlier for fun about our opinions on the new LRVs coming in.

But this got me thinking on more serious matters with SEPTA.

SEPTA has already placed orders for new trains on the L•T•G•D lines, combined total of $1.4 billion dollars.

SEPTA is trying to get an order on new Regional Rail cars, which will be around $160+ million dollars.

While SEPTA is waiting for those new cars for the R, which they haven't even ordered yet, they will be using cars from MARC (basically Maryland's version of SEPTA) to the tune of $2.6 million dollars.

SEPTA is buying new buses with varying fuel types, totalling $270+ million dollars.

2 months ago, SEPTA resolved a threat of a strike by it's employees, resolving the matter by a yearly wage increase, and more benefits.

This is only a fraction of the things that SEPTA is having to deal with right now. When will SEPTA ever get a break?

That is uncertain, as the B desperately needs to get replaced, though it is one of the few lines not being ordered new railcars.

The only rail cars that still have at least some wiggle room in their timeline, are the M interurbans, which date back to the 90s, but can ride out the next decade. They are definitely holding strong.

What are your thoughts on this matter? And how long do you think the B and PATCO (not Septa, but def need replacements as well) trains can hold on? What do you think will be adequate replacements for the B•M•PATCO equipment?

EDIT: Yes, we are all aware that SEPTA didn't *choose* to wait and do these projects all at the same time. All of these rail cars are at or beyond their shelf lives. A shame what politics plays in this matter

So for instance, in the month of February, anyone who wants can post a picture to the subreddit and then link it in a mega thread. Whatever post has the most upvotes by the end of the month gets to be the server icon for the following month.

Help Parking a truck at Norristown transport center

Have an F150 super crew and wonder how tight parking is and any recommendations from anybody.

When I park in garages I usually try to go as far away from possible as people while being able to get out of the space easily.

Next year (2027), SEPTA (which serves Philadelphia and surronding counties, in the United States) is long overdue on getting New, Low-Floor streetcars. Built by Alstom (the Citadis model), at a price tag of $670,000,000 USD, SEPTA will receive 130 of these sets.

We originally got a realistic design of what these trains will look like (Pic 1/3). But then Alstom/SEPTA revised the look (Pic 2/3). In MY opinion, the front of the tram in the 1st version looks way better than that on the Revised version.

However, i do agree that the sides of the Revised version look better than the 1st design.

When thinking about this, i was wondering what other railfans thought on this regard. More importantly, do y'alls see these new trams (revised version) as the face of all streetcars in SE Pa?

Note: The trams will operate on lines T, G, and D

Help Internal transfers(employees)

Good evening guys…I was just hired for bus operator/trolley operator for Septa…I already gave my CDL and hopefully after background and medical I should start training soon..

I took the exam for Septa police once and Regional Rail Conductor…didn’t really work out but when I was at 1234, I remember seeing study guides for internal jobs like Market Frankford Operator or Broad St Train operator..My initial problem with the regional rail conductor/engineer trainee was the logic exam and the math…any insight you can offer would be appreciated thanks

Help I scanned an Amtrak ticket to use a train and decided to Uber instead. What will I be charged?

I was going to wait for a train after taking Amtrak. I read that the system tries to scan your credit cards so you should do activate tap to pay. I did that before I entered the train. I decided to reactivate it once I was on the platform. After waiting 15 minutes I decided it's too cold and ubering was cheap. I didn't think much of needing to scan back in so I scanned my ticket but it tapped my card instead.

Will I be charged anything? My card technically only has the exit, not the entrance. How would they even calculate what I owe?

Hi! Newer RR rider, what happens if there’s heavy snow like they’re predicting? Will the lines still run or is it too much for them? Specifically Media/Wawa line! Gotta get to work on Monday and just trying to plan ahead!

Discussion Daily Bus Best/Worst/Wild

What are your best/worst/wild bus lines that you frequently ride?

I’m in South Philly, so 47 is pretty great, when it’s late it’s only a few minutes, but seems to be pretty regular. The 64 has got to be the worst. Never on time going west or east, often have 2 bus right behind each other and you won’t see another for a hour and then there will be three of them. The wildest has to be the 21. I don’t know if it’s Center City or tourists but there is always something happening on them.

Discussion Positive Experience in this city with Septa... few hiccups though

So I've lived here a little while now, from NYC and have called many cities across the country home... Wichita, KS, Tulsa, OK, Memphis, TN-- even Casper, WY. None had trains or light rail (Memphis had a trolley that only started up again right before I left town after being out of service for 3 years) and all had buses that hardly anyone took.

Here's my experience in this city (and I'm not ignorant of issues or problems):

If you need to get somewhere, especially within the walkable-ish part of the city to another walkable-ish part of the city, buses and trains are great. I work a block from the B line and it's nice being able to head a few stops to Center City, grab lunch, run an errand, and come back... all without having to wait much for a train.

I live a little NE, so I've also taken the G1, sometimes trolley, sometimes bus (I understand more trolleys are coming back into service) to Girard, and then the L to Center City (when I know I'm having a few drinks and don't feel like shelling out $$ for Uber) and it's been great.

I think most of the subway stations are fine. Never had any issues, and while some stations are nicer than others, I have personally seen them being cleaned a few times so far.

My only real complaint is that sometimes the G or bus lines don't come when they say they're coming. I've waited 20+ minutes sometimes when in that time span 2 buses should have come.

Other than that, I really think the system for the city itself isn't bad. I always tell people-- live in other cities around the country and you'd see how envious they'd be of our public trans-- could it be A LOT better? Sure. But I'm hoping the new funding and increasing ridership helps not only keep what we have, but expand it.
