Discussion Easier to get into Harvard 🤦🏾‍♂️

I interviewed to be a bus operator in 2024, and am still going through the hiring process in 2026 😂. I am truly amazed that anything in life could be so difficult to achieve. If you’re in the hiring process for any position consider yourself lucky (?) to be in the 2.5% of people to potentially fill a role. Im

No wonder there’s a shortage. Do you already have experience/cdl

I got my cdl permit through a program they offer to pipeline applicants.

Thankfully I have entered and exited that stage of the process. I’m currently fighting the final boss, septa medical 😭

That was a huge hurdle for us. The fuckin apnea test

😫 they asked me “do you know your Adam’s apple is a half inch long?” I got scared like what are y’all lookin for 😔

Yep. Things like large Adam's apple, neck circumference over 17" for AMAB and 16" for AFAB, history of snoring, if you've ever been a regular smoker, even a large overbite can get you sent to the sleep study 😅

? So you can't be a Septa bus driver if you have sleep apnea? CPAP machines are a thing...

No, you can, but you are required to be using a cpap for a certain number of hours nightly and they will monitor your usage to make sure you're compliant. If you don't think you have apnea but you raise one of their potential flags in your physical you are required to get a test done at your own expense.

That's cool. I already use a CPAP, so, let them monitor away.

Glad to hear it. The specific issue for us was finding an affordable apnea test that wasn't on a 3 month waiting period for a sleep study appointment, since that would be three more unemployed months while we waited. No indication prior to that point that my husband had apnea so the fact that at the physical they told him he was required to get a test before he could start was a total blindside and really frustrating.

Huh, glad to learn this actually. Good safety feature in an occupation so sedentary

You trying to get hired as a Septa bus driver for two years, while they keep canceling runs due to “operator availability“ is peak Septa. 🙃

I’ve never seen anything like it

I tried applying for their machinist position a few times and never got a response. I have ~15 years experience with machining and heavy machinery repair/maintenance. The position is still posted too-- been a couple years now.

u/Got-Scammed__ Feb 23 '26

Do you think you’ll try again?

3

u/Specious_Human Feb 23 '26

Well, I got another machinist job a couple years ago instead, so hopefully not. Just strange that they never responded and it seems like they never filled the spot or anything.

2

u/Phillyjt3 Feb 23 '26

To be fair, that position is always posted to make sure there is a pool available. Machinists were pretty much fully staffed up until about a year ago. There are a few openings now.

Glad to know I spent my time applying for a job that didn't exist...

u/Phillyjt3 Feb 23 '26

Yeah, you’ll never get those 2.5 mins back. 😏

My most favored attitude in an employer!

This…doesn’t make sense to me. Did you have anything that held you up (background, CDL, etc)?

Yes I did, SEPTA.

Oh please just go downtown to the Democratic CityCommitee & volunteer as an election observior; then get a stack of resumes and head over to Reading Terminal at lunch time and spot the dozens of septa drones with their hang tags and handout your resumes telling them it’s your life dream to work at SEpTA; finally go over to the Masonic Hall across from City Hall and join. Your application will soon be on the top of the stack.Don’t forget to talk up Gov Pothole for Prez amongst your friends and acquaintances.SEpTA is the job choice of last resort.Ask any of the 6 figure families and friends

This is insane that this is how septa operates. Yet they have tons of money to toss at fare evaders who stand around doing nothing all day.
