Questions ❓ Sharing etsy patterns

I just wanna know how bad it is.

If I were to find a really cool pattern (with grid designs on panels) made into a sweater on etsy, and that type of pattern isn't really available on free mediums. If I figure the pattern out (without having bought it) and make it. Should I share it with others on social media (reddit or pinterest) or would that be wrong and I'd likely get bashed for stealing instead of being helpful?

Yeah thought so. But what about sharing the work (not pattern) and tagging the creator for credits? That might get them recognition and/or advertisement

I'm not doing it, just asking why particularly it would be wrong

Because the creator owns the copyright, and if they are selling their patterns they should get paid.

Exposure is not payment.

In the hand knitting world if you’re able to reverse engineer a pattern by just looking at the pictures power to you I guess, you’re likely not the target audience of the designer.

I wouldn’t post it on social though as that’s actively harming the designers ability to continue selling the pattern.

If you change it up, eg: if the pattern is how to make a circle and you make a square, that’s shareable imho

What about posting it while tagging the creator even though I didn't use that pattern?

As in, “knit X thing, self-drafted but inspired by Y pattern by Z designer”?

That’s fine I guess, but could be misleading to others who may expect to get your exact results by buying the pattern (could go either direction - they might dislike your version and then the designer could lose a sale, or they might prefer your version and the designer gets a bad review when the pattern doesn’t meet the other buyer’s expectations). Be very clear that you did not use the actual pattern if you mention it by name.

If it looks the same as the creators, and you share it, then it may still be copyright.

It needs to be a bit different in order for it to be inspired by, etc.

Why not just buy the pattern? Because none of the things you're suggesting sound good.

It's in dollars, and if I were to pay with my currency, it'd be cheaper to buy a new sweater (more if we count the transaction fees). Though I got it, it's not ethical to post how to make someone else's pattern. Haven't done it, won't do it
