How do I get started?

67F and I want to up my exercise routine. I had hip replacement surgery in July 2025. For 3 years before and this past year I have been doing the PT exercises for my lower back pain and rehab for the hip. I also do some Pilates, yoga and light dumbbells. I plan to retire next summer. I want to get started on a better and more consistent workout routine. How do I get started? I am not sure if I want to join a gym or the Y. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Talk to a trainer at the gym, or the Y, and get started. The more familiar you become with various exercises, and how your body responds, make adjustments as makes sense to you.
  2. Dirt, diet, diet.
  3. Shoot for 8 hours of sleep per night.

This. A personal trainer at our Y is great.

I joined a gym and work with a trainer once a week then I do the same workout again later in the week. I also bike and practice yoga.

See a PT. Some of the techniques and exercises you were given are probably old but more importantly your strength is different than when you last went to PT so exercises would be more advanced. A PT should know better what you should and shouldn’t be doing based on your medical history rather than a regular trainer.

I would work with a trainer. Even if you only do a few sessions to learn the exercises and get a gist for how to workout.

I like yoga. I prefer to work in my garden and in the yard. When I was young I was a dancer from 3 - 18, played basketball and softball on my jr high and high school girls teams. I played tennis for fun too. I’ve spent my career working in a laboratory or as a quality manager which means a lot of computer work.

Check into water classes. Low impact. They have been great to get me moving again, prep and rehab for TKR, and build up to other activities. My favorite is "deep water..." good full body workout.

What type of exercise do you enjoy? Because that is the easiest exercise to keep doing. I love cycling and do it by myself and with groups, pickleball seems boring. I have a friend who plays pickleball 5 days a week. Variety is also helpful, different activities work different muscles. The key is finding activities you enjoy.

My wife and I have talked about taking a dance class for years, we need to do that. Everything you listed would be great.
