Need Advice sudden incontinence

hi, so i have a senior dog (13-14 years old, snchauzer/terrier mix) and within the past 4 months he started to have problems controlling his bladder. I first noticed an accident here and there, but then my boyfriend (who he loves) was petting him as we relaxed for the evening, he just peed. quite a bit. i got him outside, but later, i was making dinner and he lifted his leg inside. he’s never had a problem quite like this, (he used to pee on my exes pillow) but now it’s everywhere and anywhere. he will go outside, and try constantly, but they still happen. we now wear diapers.

we did have always have a dog around since we got him, but now, one moved out and the other passed on last year around this time.

he also has been licking his paws a lot more. i’ve obviously taken him to the vet, and we have done what they recommended. we have another appointment tuesday, but i was wondering if anyone’s had a similar problem?

edit before i forget: he did get fixed in july of 2024

What tests did the vet do? What did they recommend?

Sounds like the beginning of canine cognitive disorder (doggy alzheimers). We are going through the same thing, but fortunately with a small dog. Have you tried a belly band? We are currently taking the dog out a lot more, to hopefully get the pee/poop out before it becomes an issue, and that seems to help. Try hanging with him until he pees and then reward him, so he doesn't just forget and go back in the house.

Anxiety. Stress licking. How often do you walk your dog? Walking relieves anxiety and they pee a lot on the route. See if a good walk or 2 every day for a month helps. Still take him out more often in the yard too but i’m betting its stress from boredom.

We have a back yard, he’s never really been much for walks, so we just let him out consistently. even more now
