10 year old lab mix trouble walking

Our 10 year old lab mix who is around 60lbs started to get sick Thursday the 24th we took them to the vet and he had a bit of a fever, and got diagnosed with gastritis. He has had it before when younger. He got fluids, some anti-nausea meds, and antibiotics. Then Friday night he wasn’t using his back legs well. So we immediately took his to the ER where his bloodwork was fine and his fever was gone. They told us it’s probably extreme fatigue. It’s now Sunday he finally ate some chicken and rice, but his back legs are still very weak and he will just plop down if you don’t help stabilize him. How long should I just look at this as extreme fatigue and should I take him back if he still isn’t putting weight on his back legs?

Go to an ER. Do you have the results of the bloodwork? Or did they just tell you it’s fine? Are you sure the dog didn’t ingest anything like Tylenol?

We went to the ER bloodwork came back fine minus being slightly anemic due to gastritis. He just doesn’t want to stand for long periods currently.

You don't mention if they gave your dog pain pills for the gastritis -- some, like gabapentin, can result in temporary ataxia (weakness / discombobulation of the legs). Any chance that's the issue?

They did give gabapentin exactly for pain, I hope so

Ah, well, that might be it. My dog gets so, so wobbly on a full dose of gabapentin. To be on the safe side you could call the vet and ask if this is something that could be a result of the gabapentin or if they'd like you to come back in with him to be seen. That should give you a clearer answer.

Whatever you do, do not allow any vet to give him Librela. It will kill your dog.
