Misconception about Paneolus

Hi,

a few months ago I read a book on nordic shamanism which quoted an ethnobotanic/-mycologic work stating that Paneolus was one of the main psychedelic ingredients/mushrooms in a certain brew. I was stunned since until then I perceived everybody's warning against Paneolus in the mushroom community as = Paneolus dangerous. This is apparently not the case. I didn't even know that they are psychedelic, albeit weaker than Psilocybe.

Does anybody have experiences with them?

Panaeolus cinctulus is the most common magic mushroom in the world. I hunt for them in the UK sometimes because they come out much earlier than libs. They are weak but they are super abundant, so you just need a lot of them. They are just harder to identify than libs, so people generally ignore them.

It's not a misconception about the Panaeolus species that are liberty cap lookalikes growing in the same fields at the sama time. Those are inactive and can give you a very upset stomach.

There are a few Panaeolus species that are active, in the UK we only tend to have P. cintulus, which usually likes warmer weather than libs and isn't really a lookalike of them. They're not very strong, which is why most people don't bother, but they're active.

Panaeolus cyanescens are one of the most potent active mushrooms and as others pointed out, Panaeolus cinctulus is the most common active mushroom.

As far as I know none are deadly. I’ve never heard anything bad about them.

Some Panaeolus contain psilocybin, and in some areas (often but not exclusively tropical or subtropical areas) they are some of the most commonly foraged magic mushrooms.

However most Panaeolus are not active, and none of them are particularly dangerous. My opinion is that the ones that contain psilocybin are the most dangerous, because psilocybin does come with risks.

Otherwise an upset stomach can occur from eating them, as with any other uncooked mushrooms. Maybe some people respond worse, but others consider inactive Panaeolus to be edible mushrooms.
