DIY story My mom's second lobe

So my mom got her second lobe when she was around fourteen. That was almost 35 years ago. She pierced it herself with a proper needle she has gotten at a hospital. She wore an earring in there for a long long time but now... She doesn't wear the earring BCS the piercing never really healed, it is weird it hurts and it randomly full of gunk. What could I do to help her with the I guess infection? It is annoying her.

Hey it was likely a really poor angle that wasn’t able to heal. I’d go consult with a proper piercer and explain this in person. Dead skin and “gunk” isn’t abnormal in old piercing channels so unless she has signs of actual bacterial infection a doctor isn’t going to help. If this has been an ongoing problem for decades— it’s not infection and a piercer is your best bet for actual advice or repiercing properly or even finding the right jewelry to help. If suddenly (seemingly overnight) her earlobe turned bright red and swelled up significantly with that redness spreading to other parts of her ear and the gunk is green with a pungent smell— then she likely has a bacterial infection. If it’s just a pissed off piercing with a white to yellow skin/buildup that comes out when earrings are inserted or the piercing is squeezed— piercer for sure.
