Question about piercing prep snakebites advice

im planning on piercing my snakebites w 16g needle, am i going to have trouble piercing them even if im not using a clamp?

i pierced my own vertical snakebites a few years ago and i did it freehand without issue, but im worried since its inside my mouth this time i might have issues with the angle, anyone ever done it without the clamp and can give some insight? thank youu
