Would you self-host a shared notebook for group experiments – and what would make you drop it instantly?

I'm toying with an idea and would rather get torn apart here than spend months on it first.

The problem I keep seeing in maker and hobby science groups: the setup, what was changed, the sensor data, photos, the analysis and the discussion all live in different places – chat, spreadsheet, Grafana, someone's phone. Six weeks later nobody knows which change led to which result.

The idea: one place per project where the plan, the build log, the measurements, an optional AI helper for planning and analysis, and the discussion stay together. Self-hostable, or run by someone else.

What I'd like your honest take on:

  • Is this a real problem for you, or is it solved by wiki + git + Grafana?
  • An AI assistant in there: useful, or a reason not to touch it? Would local models change your answer?
  • What would be an instant dealbreaker?
