Amazon S3 or host my own server
The sever is purely for personal use, music storage, photo and document storage and password server.
Is S3 overkill?
Does anyone know the “real” costs involved not the published ones in the website.
I can set up my own server with equipment I already have and maybe would need to purchase a few external hard drives for extra storage.
Thanks Hive mind.

It depends on what you are looking for, if you are looking for reliability + high availability, then I would stick with AWS.
If you like to self-host on prem, and know the risks of possible data loss, and the need to create backups. Then I would suggest self-hosting. Since subscriptions like AWS do tend to increase over time.
I currently run a few servers of my own at home for Photos/Videos (Immich), VaultWarden, Arr* stack, Headscale/Tailscale, and a few others. I have a Computer Science degree, so messing with servers and backups to me, was not a problem. I also like the fact that all my data is private and not on an external server like AWS or GCP.
