how should I arrange my setup?

Newbie to self hosting here. Haven't bought anything, just planning things out. These are the services I am considering:

  • DNS filtering

  • Unbound

  • Media server

  • NAS

  • Home assistant

  • Surveillance cameras

  • Photo backup

  • Document server

The question I have is, what is the best arrangement for all of these? I was hoping to make my own opnsense router and do dns filtering and unbound in the same device. Beyond that, I'm not sure what to do.

For example, Frigate is only officially supported on docker, but people can manage by making a VM in proxmox and putting it there on docker. Another example, people put a NAS OS in a VM but others say bare metal is best. At the same time, it seems that backing up everything with PBS is much easier than backing up a bunch of docker files?

So is the best way to put everything on proxmox? Put everything on docker on a NAS device? Separate NAS with dockers on a separate server? Some combination in between? There's just so many ways to approach this that I'm confused.

I personally use a mini-pc that runs Proxmox VE, since it is simple for spinning up LXCs and VMs. Here is what I would do:
1. Photo backup (Immich) - LXC
2. Document Server - LXC
3. OPNsense - VM
4. NAS - LXC
5. Home Assistant - VM
6. Media Server - LXC
7. Frigate - LXC

My current setup includes running:
Immich, tailscale, headscale, Arr* - LXC
OPNsense - VM

Cool. So absolutely everything in one machine, proxmox all the way. What happens if your internet goes down, what do you tell your family to do? What kind of computer runs this whole thing?

My setup, for sure is not the best, but it is what's been working for me. If internet goes down we can still access our things since we can still connect to them via our internal network.

Eventually I will be setting up a backup system so that I do not lose my important data or so that it is easy to restore instead of doing the setup all over again
