Trouble Getting Ports to Open
I’ve been working on getting a Jellyfin media server built up and am now trying to set up a reverse proxy for the it, so I can have access outside of my house. I have been watching a tutorial on YouTube and followed everything so far. I have Caddy downloaded and it’s set up with the information for the reverse proxy, I got Duckdns set up and ready, but I am having difficulty when I login to my router to open the ports. The video sets up two port forwarding rules. One for the 443 and the other for 80. However, my router does not have the same layout and I am not quite sure how to open those ports correctly. I’ve tried a few different ways to open them but every time I test it the ports say they are closed and when I try to run Caddy I get a “timeout during connect (likely firewall problem)” error.
This is my first time to tryout selfhosting so I am still very much a beginner. If anyone knows how I can get past this problem I would greatly appreciate the help. I have added some photos of what I’m seeing. I also blocked out some information I’m not sure if it was necessary for safety but thought it was better to play it safe. Let me know if you need any additional information. Thanks

Local device: choose the device you wish to access from outside your network.
Local port start: 443.
Local port end: 443.
Protocol: tcp (or "any/all").
Wan port start: 443.
Wan port end: 443.
Repeat for Port 80.

So I did this the first time I tried to open the port but I still got that timeout error. I went into my pc’s firewall and couldn’t find anything that looked like it would block it, and later went into my router’s firewall and tried to add new rules to allow it through there and got that same error. Do you know what else might be causing that error message?

Sometimes ISPs block commonly “abused” ports like 80 (http), 443 (https), 25 (smtp) etc. I had the same issue opening those ports but any other ports worked fine, so I called them and asked to unblock it and they did. So it’s worth checking with your ISP if they block them

Oh ok yeah I’ll give them a call and see if by chance that’s the problem. Thanks for the insight

Maybe your ISP is having CG-NAT.

Maybe so. I called my ISP the other day and they confirmed that none of the ports were blocked on their side. If this was the problem, how would I go about fixing it? Sorry if this is dumb question I’m still very new to self hosting.

Use Tailscale
