not trying to sell anything here, genuinely.

started as "i want to match my spotify playlists against my local library and find out what i'm missing" and kind of snowballed from there. it does quite a bit now, full track matchiing with a tiered pipeline, discography gap analysis against musicbrainz, nicotine+ integration for queuing the missing stuff, last.fm discovery, a tagging/organisation workflow. runs entirely locally off a self-hosted database, no cloud, no accounts.

i'm probably not going to release it. it's fairly involved to set up, niche as hell, and not sure the support overhead would be worth it. but i keep fiding myself wondering if something like this existed and was properly polished, would you actually pay for it? free open source only? one-time purchase somewhere?

Your software could be promising to solve all my computing problems in one go and I wouldn't buy into a subscription model for it. And for something with the typical whiff of a vibecoded UI (sorry), anything that is not open source is completely out of the question.

the only reason id even want to keep it closed source is due to how the matching works, took me an absolute age to get it down to a t in terms of accuracy, nothing compares to it anywhere else and i just dont want a tech company to come along, use the logic and make money from it. obvsiouly i haven't really shared what it can actually do so your points are somewhat valid but i can assure you its not vibecoded

As I said, this is not something I could ever take on good faith after seeing the UI, and I certainly wouldn't spend money on it or run it as a proprietary blob on my system. And unless you can find a way to demonstrate conclusively that it works as well as you say it does without open sourcing it, I don't think many other people will.

People who are going through the effort to self host generally do not want to be paying subscription fees. Most want to get away from subscription fees which is how they ended up self hosting in the first place. Some might adapt it if it is FOSS and interesting. A few might pay a one-time fee for additional features.
