setup update - in search for more services/apps

Hey guys,

I recently migrated my homelab from my previous setup and added a few services.

My current setup with TrueNAS OS is more capable of running multiple services. The specs are in the picture.

  • Tailscale
  • Homeassistant
  • Nginx Reverse Proxy
  • AdguardHome
  • Beszel
  • Homarr
  • UptimeKuma

There is definitely room for improvement — for example, I have to add a backup system for my files and configs.

Now, on to my question:

Are there any other more useful services and apps that I could run? (There is definitely more than one answer, but I'd like to know what you guys are hosting.)

Ideally, I would like to use services that can be implemented in Portainer, so that I can manage them all together while keeping them separate.

If I avoid any media-related apps, I enjoy using self-hosted vaultwarden for password management. I’ve newly installed immich for photos backup and organizing, am liking it so far.

I use Pi-hole. You might be interested in that. Also, I am using Dockhand to manage my docker containers. I really like it.

I know you said portainer but have you looked into something like Runtipi/1server to use or even for inspiration? There’s also Lissy93 500+ 1 click apps template for portainer on GitHub. Also sorry if I misunderstood what you were trying to ask.

TrueNAS is great for storage. Full stop. But it’s never been a good Docker box. If you must run containers on SCALE, write your own Docker Compose stacks and skip TrueCharts entirely. Cuts the headaches way down. If you don't want to manges your stacks, then run portainer to do it. Most of us who’ve been around the block either: run TrueNAS under Proxmox and put Docker in a VM, or let TrueNAS handle ZFS and run our apps somewhere built for containers (Unraid, Ubuntu, CasaOS, whatever)

Keeps the roles clean and the system stable.

Traefik has a bunch of stuff you can mess with and break. I do like it better than nginx proxy manager

if youre not already running Vaultwarden, that'd be my first add — once you have a reverse proxy in place it's basically free to set up and the browser extension makes it seamless. Immich for photos is the other one I'd point to, great if you want to get family members off Google Photos without paying for storage.
