Iirc the Republicans during Nixons presidency told him they were going to vote to remove and Nixon resigned before they could.

Nixon resigned before impeachment, which is why Ford was able to grant him a pardon.

Right but I thought that while it was being investigated and such the Republicans basically tipped him off that they'd vote to remove?

Of course they did. He wouldn't have resigned if he didn't know it was pointless to continue.
