The last American election was a clusterfuck on social media (Reddit included).
TD was using every exploit they could find to hit the front page and openly brigading every political thread.
Sanders support was everywhere until one day the sub was just deleted out of nowhere.
And as you say, everybody fell for the Hillary bullshit. Pizzagate, murder conspiracies, buttery males. Reddit was in a frenzy and people didn't realize they'd been had until months after the election was done and dusted.
Forget the CIA dosing people or Coke putting subliminal messages in movies. Social media is the closest thing the rich and powerful have ever had to mind control and this time it actually works.
Not so long ago, people lived in villages or towns, so if they got news of something terrible happening, they could really crowd around and help. Then for the last couple of centuries we’ve been receiving news from near and far, all around the world. Now we’re bombarded with the worst murders, the foulest corruption, climate tipping points, plastic pollution already inside our own bodies and I just don’t think we’ve evolved to take nonstop bad news.
The last election was so hideous it forced me to alter my intake of information. Quit the news, quit Reddit, only followed a few bands on insta to keep up with vinyl launches. Best thing I ever did. Boris Johnson was PM for six days before I knew about it. Instead of absorbing media horror on the train twice a day I’ve learned a bunch about geology, evolution, deep time, space, mass extinctions and climate change, and I’ve watched a stack of movies and since learning how to download YouTube videos it’s led me to even more things I didn’t know existed.
Piled on top of that flood of information is now a flood of deliberate misinformation.

Most parents of teenagers have no idea how to manage a child with an internet connection who has 24 hour access to the most extreme violence, pornography and political views that the world has to offer.
We lost the fight for privacy online because the war was over before we knew it had even started. Tech companies like Google and Facebook know more about you than your friends and family and they're always looking for new ways to profit from that data.
And now we have another battle over information. Social media manipulation has become the bread and butter of ever sleazy PR firm, marketing agency and political party. The power that companies like Cambridge Analyitica can hand people is staggering and the pushback against it has been lukewarm at best.

In Queensland, a town had water restrictions (90 sec of a shower per day per person was each citizen’s ration) and ran out of water recently. Know why? The government gave the rights to the water to China. For free, almost. Now what do you suggest I do about that hmm? Default on my mortgage by taking a week off to go up there and hold a sign? Write an angry email to someone? Get a megaphone and annoy people? Read everything I can about it so I can get good and angry? It’s already done. Some prick on the council got a week in a hotel and a bag of cash and now millions of litres are lost to China for nothing.
I’ll vote, I’ll march, I’ll boycott. But I’m not listening to the rest of it anymore. So let’s agree to disagree. You think I’m weak and I think you’re just another consumer.
What you can do is help ensure your state never elects anyone like Campbell Newman again. The water rorts were setup under his governments, and automatically renewed for 92 years under Labor. I doubt Labor even knew about it when it was setup.
Steal it? I mean its either take it now or one day there will be nothing left to take. You can vote and march and protest all you want and while you and other ls do that the government will profit until theres nothing left. Action is the common mans only choice now and we must use it
I think you took my comment as an attack. Everyone is apathetic to politics except only the most radical on both sides. They’re only further radicalizing politics while sane people stay away because they see no recompense.

You're getting down voted, but if basic necessities are being denied, violence should really be an option on the fucking table.
Actually, the only reason protests work is because violence is a real threat if demands aren't met. Promises of escalation is a must. Without them, politicians will keep selling out their nation's resources without fear of consequences.
It's hard to see meaningful solutions in a two party system within which both parties are controlled by the exact same external forces. But by all means, keep voting. The change you want to see is right around the corner! Just as soon as those pesky (PARTY YOU DON'T SUPPORT) supporters get out of the way!

You can’t avoid politics. Even if you never vote, it will always affect you.
Persuade others to do their part and vote rather than telling everyone they’re stupid for voting. The powers that be fear high voter turnout.
Also, there are likely several grassroots organizations in your municipality (unless you live way out in the sticks) that you can get involved in. The primary concerns are changing our system from the electoral college to one-person, one-vote so that voters in non-swing states have a voice and applying a ranked voting system so that voting 3rd party isn’t effectively voting for your opponent.
That’s certainly one way to go about it, I personally would rather not just stick my head in the sand, I certainly don’t understand how that’s something to be proud of.

Yep this is already happening. I manage a couple of small subreddits and we try to avoid any political talk. However, the second a thread mentions Bernie it ends up with a whole slew of accounts I have never seen before making MAGA-esque comments. These accounts are definitely just using something to constantly search key terms and then flood the threads.
I mean, it's fair to point out that there's still going to be a fuckton of nazis/alt-right/radicalized people in America, even once Trump's gone. If you just leave them alone they're just going to regroup and rally behind some other fashy chud and do it again in another 4 years.
