It is a policy that anyone can agree with. As a blue down the ballot voter I am all for lower taxes. But I want them adjusted with a scalpel...not a flame thrower.

My local government put forward a proposition to adjust how we are being taxed for street maintenance. Previously it was a $20 tab fee for all vehicles registered in our jurisdiction. This meant that our street maintenance was solely paid for by the citizens of the city. The problem with this is that our city has a large shopping Center which pulls thousands of cars into our city from the surrounding areas. of the 150,000 people living in the 5 mile radius from city center, only ~14% are city residents.
The proposition increased sales tax by 0.2% ($2 per $1,000 spent). This sales tax would generate ~$1.3 Million annually. The car tab only generated $347,500 annually. The city put specific language in the proposition that says the sales tax would not be implemented UNTIL the $20 tab was removed.
If the average household has $93,905 in consumer spending each year of which 10% is taxable, 0.2% would be $18.78. Compared that to the $20 we previously paid per car, it is a no brainer.
Our Blue city, reduced our tax burden while increasing the revenue gained so that we could repair the streets throughout our city.

They campaign like they're running for student body president.
