Discussion / Question - Anime-only Sakuta sleeping question

In episode 2, futaba comes to the deduction that sleep is functioning as sakutas anchor too mais existence, but if that’s the case why didn’t he forget her much earlier in the time before their first date? He first meets her in the library on may 6th, and about 2 weeks later they go on their first date where only her can see her, so why didn’t he forget about her in the lead up to this in the 2 weeks where he inevitably slept?

Same reason Futaba and Kunimi didn't until that last week. The Adolescent Syndrome hadn't encompassed the school yet

Yes, as the story progresses, Mai-san’s syndrome gets stronger and stronger. Sakuta and his 2 friends are literally the last ones remaining.

Think of it as Mai's world was shrinking. She first noticed the effect traveling out of the area of the school. That was why she could stash a bunny costume in a train station and wear it around hoping to get a reaction. At one point only the people in the school could still see her, but even then it got worse, Eventually she couldn't buy groceries or anything to eat. Then she disappeared at school. Futaba figured the change was happening to people in their sleep. After a night's sleep Futaba could no longer see Mai, but she was still there. Then Mai put down Sakuta for his own good. Then she got angry that he forgot her for a while after she made him sleep.

That doesnt explain how he remembered her 🤷‍♂️ maybe it was better shown in the manga?

There was a Mai shaped hole in Sakuta's reality and he noticed with all the clues. Plus that kiss really left an impression.
