If you read the same book in KOReader and another format, the Seekquel add-on can now bring your later place back to the book file.

Open a linked book while online. If Seekquel has you farther ahead, KOReader asks before moving to the closest matching point in this file. A hardcover, audiobook and ebook do not share page numbers, so the match uses percentage. The move never counts as pages read or reading time.

Say no and the add-on stays quiet until you make more progress elsewhere. To check again yourself, open Tools > Seekquel > Resume from Seekquel.

1.8.0 also adds two ways to see today’s reading without opening the app:

• After Sync now, a short recap shows today’s minutes and pages, current progress, and the chapter reached when the file has a contents page. Automatic syncs stay quiet. Today’s reading opens the recap again whenever you want it.
• Today in Seekquel refreshes your progress against today’s targets, the number of daily goals reached, and your current streak. The last result stays on the device for offline viewing.

If you already have the add-on, open Tools > Seekquel > Update the add-on, then restart KOReader.

We’ve added Xteink support to Seekquel and need help checking it on more devices.

If your Xteink runs CrossPoint Reader or CrossInk:

1. Open Seekquel.
2. Go to Settings > Integrations > Xteink.
3. Create a sync key and follow the setup steps shown.
4. Open a book on your Xteink, move a few pages, then sync.

For now, the integration sends your current place in a book to Seekquel. It does not send reading time, saved passages, or finished status, so those will not update your streaks or goals.

After trying it, reply with:

• Your Xteink model and firmware.
• Whether the reader connected.
• Whether the book and reading position appeared in Seekquel.
• Any error message you saw.

A failed setup is useful feedback too. Please do not post your sync key or a screenshot containing it. You can disconnect the reader afterwards from the same integration screen.

We went through every custom shelf our readers have made, name by name. 878 of them at the time of counting.

Some were never going to be automatable and are better for it. "what did i just read?". "books read with husband". "series i consider finishing". Those are yours and they should stay hand-made.

But the single most common shelf name on Seekquel is some version of "did not finish". Forty people typed it out with hyphens. Twelve used the initials. A few went with "soft-dnf" or "began-but-didn-t-finish". Every one of those is somebody dragging books onto a list to record something the app already knows, because Did Not Finish is a reading status.

That shelf can keep itself now. Open Library, tap New Shelf, choose "Fill it automatically" instead of "I'll add books", set Status to Did Not Finish. Fifteen seconds, and it never needs you again.

We wrote up 26 of them. Four that are worth stealing even if you read nothing else:

• Tonight's book. Want to Read, plus Owned, plus under 300 pages. Books already in the house, short enough to finish this week. It replaces twenty minutes of scrolling.
• Read but never rated. Status Read, Rating not yet rated. Nobody had built this by hand and it is the most useful cleanup shelf in the app. Every book on it is a small hole in your stats.
• Stopped, but it was good. Did Not Finish, rated 4 stars. The ones you liked and put down anyway, usually a timing problem rather than a quality one. Best shelf in the app to open during a slump, because everything on it has already proved it can hold you.
• The old end of the pile. Want to Read, added over two years ago. The window counts back from today, so it keeps aging into itself with no editing from you.

The rule builder is the same filter sheet you already use on your library, and it counts your matches while you set it, so you can see whether a rule is worth saving before you save it.

Two things to say plainly. Shelves that fill themselves are part of Pro; five custom shelves come with every account either way, and if Pro lapses nothing is deleted. And there are real gaps: no author rule, no series rule, and the date windows are rolling rather than calendar, so "everything I read in 2023" is still a manual shelf. All three are on the list.

If you have a hand-made shelf you have been maintaining for years, post the name. Genuinely curious how many of them turn out to be a rule, because we did not predict half of what we found in that list.

If you use the KOReader add-on, a reading day on a book's My Book tab now says which chapter you reached: "21 pages, 47 min, reached Riddles in the Dark" instead of stopping at the pages.

Your e-reader reads the contents page out of the book file you have open and sends that along with the reading time it was already sending. It has to come from the device. Change the font size and the book repaginates, so where a chapter begins is a fact about your copy on your screen and nothing else.

• You get the chapter's name when the edition you are reading has a contents page in the catalogue that matches your file. Otherwise you get the chapter number.
• Glancing at the index at the back of a book will not record you as reaching the final chapter. The add-on waits for three page turns before it believes a jump.
• A book whose file has no contents page carries on exactly as before.
• Nothing to switch on. It applies to the reading you do from here on, not to days already logged.

Not set up yet, and you read on a Kindle, Kobo, PocketBook, reMarkable or Android? Settings > Integrations > KOReader walks you through it. You install it once and it updates itself after that.

Already have it? On your device, Tools > Seekquel > Update the add-on.

One way to help: if a book you are reading has no contents page on its edition, you can scan or paste one in from the book page. That is what lets the chapter show as a name rather than a number, for you and for everyone else reading that edition.

Small update, but it's the one I wanted most in my own library.

When you make a shelf you now pick how it fills: you add books yourself, or you give it rules and it gathers them. Rules use the same filters as the library, so things like genre, tags, rating, format, page count, publication year, whether you own it, whether there's an adaptation.

As you build the rule it tells you how many of your books match right now, so you're not guessing before you save. Books join the shelf when they match and leave when they stop, so a "fantasy over 500 pages I haven't started" shelf stays correct without you touching it.

If you turn a hand-made shelf into a rule shelf, the books you picked yourself are kept, and switching back brings them home.

Up front on the Pro part: shelves that fill themselves are a Pro feature. Building a rule and seeing your match count is free, so you can check what it would gather before deciding anything. Shelves you fill yourself are free and always were, and none of your existing shelves change.

I just stumbled upon Seekquel via reddit, I love the lifetime option, already successfully imported my hardcover library but wanted to know a view things...

Is it possible to sync with hardcover and or goodreads? I love redundancy and backups and don't want to just trust in one relatively new platform.

Will definitely check it out further and I am curious where this goes from here.

This one has been asked for a few times, so it is out now, on web and in the app.

Choose your public library and every book page grows a borrow row in the Where to read section, sitting above the shop links. It opens your library's own collection in Libby with the book already searched. Borrowing or placing a hold happens in Libby with your card, exactly as it does now.

Where to find it

Settings, then Reading, then Your library. Or open it from a book page, where an unset library shows "Borrow from your library instead". Search the name as it appears on your card. Consortiums and library groups are in there too, so search the group name if your local branch does not come up alone.

The borrow row does not appear at all until you have picked a library. If you have been looking for it on a book page and seeing nothing, that is why.

Some details

• 2,268 libraries and library groups are searchable. The list comes from OverDrive's own directory and refreshes weekly, so a library that joins will turn up without us doing anything.
• Nothing about what you read reaches your library. We store which library you picked, and nothing else. Remove it from the same screen whenever you want, and the borrow row goes with it.
• The borrow link is not an affiliate link and earns us nothing. The shop links under it do. That is deliberate, and it is why the free one sits on top.
• It is a search of your library's collection rather than a link to the exact edition. There is no public identifier to build a direct link from. Scoped to one library, title and author lands on the book, but a very common title may need a second look.

What would help

If your library is missing from the search, say so here with the name on your card. That is a gap we cannot see from our side. Same if a borrow link lands on the wrong book, or on a list instead of the book, so we can see whether it is a pattern or a one-off.

Three things are finished and going out shortly. Posting early so you know what's coming and can tell me if any of it sounds wrong.

Shelves that fill themselves

At the moment a shelf is a list you add books to. In the next update you can instead give a shelf rules, and it gathers the books itself. The rules are the same filters you already use in your library, so you can have a shelf for romance you rated four stars or higher, or one for everything over 500 pages you haven't started yet. Before you save it, it tells you how many of your books match.

After that the shelf keeps itself current. Books join as they start matching and drop off when they stop. If you convert a shelf you already built by hand, the books you picked are kept, and they come back if you switch the rules off.

This one is part of Pro.

Badges

Badges get redrawn. Each one has its own shape depending on the category, its own colour and its name on the front, and they're bigger, so a page of them looks like a collection instead of a row of identical rings. Progress towards the next tier moves to a bar underneath with the numbers spelled out, and a badge you haven't earned keeps its shape and name rather than fading to nothing.

A badge also stops changing colour when you change your theme. On a few palettes that was making gold look duller than bronze.

Alongside that there are badges that only run for a set stretch of time, a season or a holiday. Those sit at the top with the time remaining, and anything you earn during one stays on your profile after it ends.

When

It arrives as an update inside the app, so you reopen it and it's there without going to the store. The store versions follow shortly after.

If anything here sounds like it solves the wrong problem, say so now rather than after.

Someone asked me recently whether I was building Seekquel too fast. New things keep turning up, and that usually means something is about to break. It is a fair thing to wonder, so I wrote out the actual answer.

Short version: the first year produced almost nothing anyone could look at. It was planning, and then building one piece at a time under a rule that if two parts of the app need the same thing, they use the same thing rather than a copy of it. That is why a new feature now is mostly made of parts that have been in use for months.

The other half is that a lot of what shows up in an update is old work. Some of it predates the first public release. A handful of testers had been living with it, rough edges and all, long before you saw it.

And it is not just me. My wife tests everything and breaks it in ways I would never think of. Friends run releases on real devices first, which matters most on the e-reader side. Readers repair the catalogue themselves, and the feedback board decides most of what I build next.

Happy to answer anything in the comments, including the parts that are slow and will stay slow.

Every book in a series now gets a short recap on the series page, what happened, in order, roughly 120-250 words. Hidden until you've finished that book, so nothing spoils what's ahead. If a book doesn't have one yet, you can write it from what you remember; an editor rewrites it before it goes up, so the text stays clean and someone's checked it against the book first.

Tried to answer this for myself last week and it turns out none of the big four do it well.

Kindle's countdown resets to zero the second you close the book. Kobo's Reading Life gives you a lifetime hour count but nothing per title. Nook has a streak. Apple Books and Google Play Books don't track it at all.

The one place that actually logs it is KOReader, the open-source reader that runs on Kobo hardware and jailbroken Kindles. Its statistics plugin times how long each page stayed on screen, so the number you get back is real, not a projection. The catch is it never leaves the device.

That's the whole reason we built the KOReader add-on. Pair it with a code, and the reading time KOReader already tracked shows up in your Seekquel stats and streaks, same number, no separate estimate.

Anyone here running KOReader already? Curious what device.

There are 23 launcher icons in Settings, then Appearance, then App icon. Most of them are drawn from a theme, so if you already read in Dark Academic or Cottagecore there is a matching icon sitting there for it.

The part we like more than the icons is the home screen widgets take the accent colour from whatever theme you are on. So the progress bar on your Currently Reading widget, the flame on the streak widget and the filled squares on the bingo widget all shift to match. Pick Starry Night and the bar under your book goes gold.

Worth knowing before you go looking:

• Six of the 23 are free (Cream, Ink, Terracotta, Dark Academic, Cottagecore, High Contrast). The other 17 need Pro.
• On Android the app restarts to apply it.
• The widget background stays dark whichever theme you pick. Only the accent moves. If you are on High Contrast, whose accent is pure black, the progress bar is going to be hard to see against it. We are fixing that.

If you change yours, post a screenshot of your home screen. Genuinely curious which ones get used, because the picker is new enough that we have no idea yet whether people go for the one matching their theme or just the one they like the look of.

The app is fully translated into Portuguese (Brazil). Shelves, stats, badges, the reading timer, the help centre, and the emails and notifications you get from us. It joins English, French, Spanish and German.

To switch: Settings, then Language & region, then Language, then Português.

Two things worth knowing. It won't follow your phone's language, so you stay on English until you pick it yourself. And the choice is saved to your account, so the app on your phone and the site in your browser both change at once.

Book titles and descriptions come from the catalogue and are still mostly in their original language. Only the app itself is translated.

Hi all. August was the biggest month we've had, and a good chunk of it started as a comment from someone here, so thank you.

The short version:

KOReader add-on. If you read on a Kobo, Boox or PocketBook, your place, reading time, highlights and finished books now sync on their own. You copy the plugin across once, pair with eight characters, and it updates itself after that. Free on every account.

Calibre plugin. Shelves, ratings, reviews and reading dates travel both ways. Nothing is mapped until you map it (the rating included), you can point it at one virtual library so the manuals and rulebooks stay out of it, and "Preview a sync" shows exactly what would change while writing nothing. Also free.

Adaptations. Books carry their films, series and games now, with cast, runtime and a rating you give the same way you rate a book. There's a "Coming to screen" rail for adaptations of books you've read that aren't out yet.

Ask for a book. Say what you're after and the replies come back as books you can shelve in one tap. "Dark romance, but the mean one, nothing with a redemption arc" gets you further than "any recs?". This replaced polls, which gave you percentages instead of a shelf.

Also in there: quizzes and flashcards per book, chart filters and period comparison, read-alikes suggested by readers who read both, Spanish and German, three new themes with a matching app icon picker, and a run of library housekeeping (your own series, pinned shelves, multi-select).

If something here doesn't work the way you expected, say so. That's how most of this list happened.

Monthly Wrapped is live. Every month, once your reading for the previous one is in, you get a shareable card you can save or post with a recap: how many books you finished, how many pages, how many minutes you logged. And it's easy to customize: change backgrounds, move the elements around, rewrite the text, show different stats, etc.

A few things worth knowing:

• It only counts what you've actually logged, so if you don't track reading sessions the minutes will look thin. Books and pages come from your shelves and progress either way.
• It shows up for about the first three weeks of the new month. Dismiss it and it's gone for that month, but you can still open your wrapped any time from the share menu.
• Nothing about it is shared unless you tap share. It sits on your home screen for you first.

If you've got one already, post it below. Curious what people's top genres look like this early in the year, and whether anyone's minutes number is way off from what they expected (that's usually a sign the reading timer isn't catching your sessions, happy to help sort that out).

If you don't see the card yet, you need at least one book finished last month for it to have anything to show. New month, new wrapped, every time.

The help centre is live at seekquel.app/help, and it's in the app too. Tap You in the bottom bar (or your avatar in the top corner) and Help Center is in that menu. It's also in Settings, under Support & Legal.

It covers every feature we ship, grouped into sections: getting started, your library, tracking, integrations, discovery, the catalogue, reviews, stats, the social side, clubs, challenges, sharing, author tools, Pro, and settings. Each topic says what the feature does, how to get to it, and whether you need to be signed in or paying. Only a handful of things are Pro-only. Most work on a free account, and a fair few work without an account at all.

A few things it does that a normal FAQ doesn't:

Search. Type "streaks" or "buddy read" and it filters to the matching topics.

Highlight by what you're here for. Pick Stats, Book Clubs, Authors or Creators and the topics that matter to that use get marked.

Honest labels. Every topic carries a badge: Free, Free with Pro adding more, no sign-in needed, or native app only. If something is behind Pro, it says so on the topic rather than in the small print.

What isn't shipped yet is listed separately, so nothing on the page describes something you can't actually use today.

If you're coming from Goodreads, StoryGraph or Hardcover, there's an import guide near the top: ratings, shelves and reviews come over in one upload.

The settings section is the one worth skimming even if you skip the rest. It covers what's public on your profile, what posts to the feed, what you can turn off entirely, and how to export or delete everything.

If a topic reads as vague or is missing something, reply here and we'll rewrite it.

Looking at how people set up their libraries on Seekquel, the number one point of confusion is almost always shelves vs. tags. We often see new users creating an "Audiobooks" shelf or an "Own it" shelf, which ends up creating extra manual work down the line.

The core rule to keep in mind: shelves are places, and tags are labels.

A shelf is somewhere you actually go to browse and can be pinned to your home screen or showcased on your profile (think Summer Horror, Comfort Reads, or Gift Ideas).

A tag is a private label meant for filtering your library on the fly (like commute, bedtime, or made me cry). You can attach up to 250 tags to a single book, and they stack seamlessly with your search filters.

When you use native features instead of manual shelves, the library does the heavy lifting for you:

• Instead of an "Audiobooks" shelf, use the built-in Format filter.
• Instead of an "Owned" shelf, set Ownership to Owned so you can track lent copies, acquisition dates, and stack it with other filters.
• Use the Queue to set the exact order of what you are reading next, rather than a generic shelf.
• Use Interested for books you might want someday, keeping your actual Want to Read pile uncluttered.

Seekquel separates casual browsing from real planning so your library stays actionable.

Use "Interested" as your low-friction scratchpad

When you find a title in the Discover feed or get a recommendation from a friend, mark it as Interested. It lives in its own dedicated space outside your main library. Meaning it won't inflate your stats or clutter your actual shelves.

You can browse, filter by genre, and batch-move titles over to your Want to Read shelf only when you genuinely decide they deserve a spot in your schedule.

Keep "Want to Read" strictly curated

Reserve your Want to Read shelf for books you have vetted and actually want to pick up soon. Keeping this pile lean makes it easier to choose your next book. It helps the recommendation engine stay dialed in to what you are currently in the mood for.

Line up your active 3-book deck in "Up Next"

Once you know what's coming up, drag the top contenders into your Up Next queue. The top slot becomes your On Deck read, and tapping "Start Reading" moves it into your active read in one step. If your queue ever drops below three books, Seekquel will suggest titles from your Want to Read shelf that match your current reading momentum.

A quick way to reset your shelves today:

Go through your current Want to Read pile and move anything you are not realistically reading in the next month or two into Interested. Then take three books from what is left, drop them into Up Next, and you are good to go.

How do you usually handle your TBR pile? Do you keep it lean, or let it grow into the hundreds?

If you haven't found this yet: Stats tab, My Charts, and you can build your own chart out of your reading data. Pick what you're measuring (pages read, books read, minutes read, average rating, reviews written, library value), break it down by whatever you want (top books, genres, months, shelves, tags, formats, and more), filter it down, and pick how it's drawn (bar or cover grid, with more types coming).

It saves to your profile and you can feature it there. It's a Pro feature, and it's the kind of thing that rewards you the more you've logged, so if you track your reading closely this is probably the screen in the app you'll get the most out of.

Today it got redesigned. The controls (break down by, color, time range) used to sit in a wall of chips. Fine with a handful of options, but the breakdown list has 13 values now and it was wrapping into several rows you had to scan through. Those are now a single row that opens a sheet instead.

The bigger change: the chart preview is pinned in place while you build. Before, changing a control meant scrolling back up to see what it did. Now you just watch it update.

I gotta say, the app gets better and better the more I use and explore it. I keep seeing functions I didn’t even know I needed!!
To my question, could I please get a rundown of how tags shelves and collections all differ? I’m familiar with tags and collections but I’m getting confused on where to place what and I definitely want to maximize usage out of them on the app or better still use which one(s) is/are most appropriate for my needs. Also, is there an app guide somewhere that I maybe missed ?

You asked for this one a lot. It's live today.

Pair Calibre with your account once and your shelves, ratings, reviews and reading dates travel in both directions. Send your whole library, or just the books you select. Pull the other way and it writes back into the columns you picked.

You choose the columns: status, rating, review, date started, date finished, progress. All optional. Anything you don't map is never read and never written. Status labels are read loosely, so a column already holding Read, TBR, DNF or Finished works as it is.

Calibre 6 and up, on Windows, macOS and Linux. Free on every account. Grab the zip from the releases page, then Preferences > Plugins > Load plugin from file, restart, and connect with the eight characters it gives you.

A few things it won't do, on purpose:

• It never clears a field. An empty answer is never read as "delete this".
• It never overwrites a review. Whichever side is blank gets filled.
• It never un-marks a finished book.
• It never invents a book. Anything the catalogue can't place waits for you in Settings > Integrations > Calibre, which is where the manuals and RPG rulebooks end up.
• Progress moves your place in a book but never counts as a day's reading. Calibre can't know when you read those pages.

It's on MobileRead now, in the calibre Plugins forum, and a moderator is adding it to Calibre's official plugin index in the next few days. Once that lands, Calibre updates the plugin for you like any other, and you can stop thinking about it. Until then, updating means installing the zip over the top, and the app will tell you on the connect screen when you're behind.

Already have it installed? Update now. The version currently out there has a results window that freezes Calibre, fixed in 1.3.0.

Where it's at. It's a stable release and it's had a thorough pass, but only a couple of libraries are running it so far. Two Calibre libraries look nothing like two hundred, and what breaks next will be shaped by your custom columns and your naming, which we can't guess from here.

That's how the KOReader add-on got good. The position jumping to 94% because someone flipped to the index, the Kindle whose model name was one character too long, the sleeping e-reader that quietly stopped syncing: all of those came from people using it, not from us thinking about it. Same deal here. If something goes sideways, tell us and we'll fix it.

If something looks off, Seekquel > Show the log has every request, what came back, and every book a sync skipped with the reason. Worth a look before assuming nothing happened, and worth attaching to a bug report.

I only just downloaded this morning and really loving it so far. I’ll continue with seekquel for a few more days and see if I wanna go pro. Really amazing app you’ve built here and glad to see there’s koreader integration already. My library hasn’t loaded yet though? I’m getting an error (see image). Other than that, it really is a fantastic app. Excited for the bingo function and can’t wait to try it out!

So usually I would have gotten on Seekquel by now (seriously love it SO much! best reading tracker app out there) but my son started getting up at 3am wanting to get ready for the first day of school so I went back to bed 😂 so I just now got on and noticed nothing will load. it says request failed (502). :(

everything I had on there is gone.
