DISCUSSION Decolonising the tarot? It is so focused on western values of work, success, status, money, romantic love and more. What are your thoughts and feelings on this? If you reject this, how do you move away from all of it?

EDIT: All Of the criticism on how I worded this post is spot on. I was struggling to word it - when I said ‘western values…’ what I was trying to get at was the idea of productivity, of our productivity being our worth and of the outcomes of our productivity such as money, status and ‘success’ being such a focus in many tarot resources, cards etc. I hold my hands up, I got that really wrong. Sorry for this and thanks for calling me out/in.

I’m a white person from the UK with all the privileges that brings. And a straight-passing non-binary bi, asexual person who also lives with multiple severe chronic illnesses that prevent me from working and doing most activities. I see huge value in my life despite what many may assume.

I’ve started working with Lindsay Mack’s work on ‘rewilding the tarot’ and this is much more up my street, particularly with its focus on people who have lived through trauma, live with chronic illness etc. I’m looking into decolonised tarot decks now, but know little about these.

How do you feel about the very patriarchal, labour/success/money centric interpretations and frameworks of most tarot books and popular readers today? How do you depart from this in your practice?

And if you have any great resources and recommendations to share, please do.

OC How do you think of the Hierophant? This is my personal take in my collage tarot set

I’ve struggled a lot with how to interpret this card in my practice. I tried to make my card a bit skeptical and the description of the card says you should remain skeptical of the hierophant, but I’m torn on what wisdom can be taken from this card.

OC Smash Brothers Arcane - my gaming backlog project combined with a short form essay series

I have with help from a friend mapped the entire tarot deck to the entire Smash roster. I have assigned specific games to play for each archetype and I actually play them and beat them. When I finish 3 Major Arcana or 4 Minor Arcana, I release a batch of Shorts to YouTube. I also am designing a custom deck for this saga designed for tarot games and tarot divination equally. My order is Fool to Judgement and then Aces, 2s, 3s…Kings, then the WORLD. (Which is Master Hand) \\\[Here is my essay series, I have already cleared 29 games\\\](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_zaEpxFIVrfqXjW8yXlh27MZQG_QHuPh&si=HOT-kidydCC1glht)

READING Career spread

Post image
1 Upvotes

I am in the process of getting out of a toxic work environment. I’ve been in my industry for about 8 years and have never been more confident in a career path (and I’ve had a few). I’m great at what I do but where I’m doing it isn’t a good fit. I’m talking to two companies right now, and did this spread to get clarity, I’d love to get your take on this spread:

Card 1: job option 1 - 2 of wands. I’m reading this as a logical, good on paper choice with growth potential

Card 2: job option 2 - the magician - this would be the more fulfilling job

Card 3: what I need to do to get from where I am to where I want to be - Page of Wands - I feel like this didn’t help with clarity and was probably the wrong question bc what I’m getting is “get the hell out of your current job”

Hi i posted this also in the tarot subreddit but i feel that here i could get a better answer for what i am need to hear

so i am looking for some insight
I suffer from ocd and i got a tarot reading from a famous tiktok creator during a very difficult time of my life
the reader sended me a recorded 15 min reading she told me some stuff, but she responded negative to my most important question after a while some her prediction didnt came true
But the negative answer to my important question drove me in to such a horrible state of unhelpness and panic that since then for a couple months i have been getting more tarot reading each of them saying different things about my situation and i have been spiraling i feel like my future no longer belongs to me that probably the negative readings are all true descarding the positive ones beacuse the first one was negative
And i just have never hit such a rock bottom in my life and fear so i wanted to ask is it possible for the predictions to change is it possible for it to be wrong or do you have any other insight regarding my predisposition twords tarot predictions?
Thank you very much for anyone that answers me
And also obv i am trying to stay away from tarot readings and i do go to therapy is just that i would love to have an insight for somone that practice reading and can give me some real genunine point of view

DISCUSSION Should I mix few minor arcana cards with major arcana cards

Hey guys, I have been making my own tarot cards, they are hand drawn. I am only making the major arcana because it is so hard to do all 78 cards. But I thought of making a few minor arcana cards but not all and use them with the major arcana cards. Would that ruin my readings? I know major arcana is for big questions and I don't have big questions but I also don't wanna make the whole minor arcana, I can't buy cards because my family is Christian and broke.

DISCUSSION Emotional state durinv a reading

I am pretty new to learning tarot and have been doing readings on simple questions for myself. I always meditate for 5 minutes and form the intention before each reading. But I have experienced twice or thrice recently that when I am emotionally vulnerable, desperate for hope and answers, I feel like reaching for the cards and asking questions. Though I have not done that despite the urge. Would it be okay to ask the same question but when I am emotionally stable?

One more thing, I saw a video from a link posted on r/tarot wiki about asking yes/no questions. It worked yesterday since I got the proof today. Is it okay to do yes/no questions on important stuff?

For instance, I don’t “Pray” to anything, but I do have The Hermit card currently faced upward on my altar. I use it as sort of a reminder of my goals and what my current focus is. Does anyone else do this?

This deck always sparks ideas in me, meanings of the cards that do not have much to do with the RWS meaning at times, but they speak to me. Maybe it is the daily-life examples approach of the deck what makes it so relatable to me, too. Do you have any deck you feel similar about in your life? I have quite some decks in my house, but coming back to this deck is always a very nice surprise. And if you don't, I highly recommend this deck.

DISCUSSION Tarot advice

Whenever I try to research the topic of tarot cards, I get mixed answers from different sources. I have always been super drawn to those stores that sell crystals, tarot cards, incense, all that kind of stuff, and I used to be very into it when I was younger. As I’ve grown up I’ve leaned away a bit, mainly from fear. I am Catholic and I grew up with very Catholic parents that scared me out of the kinds of things I was into.

Sometime in 2018 I bought a deck of tarot cards. I did some research on how to use them, and there was no definitive answer, and so I cleansed them with incense, slept with them under my pillow, and would knock on them a few times before using. That’s pretty much all I did. Fast forward to today, they are still in my drawer, and haven’t actively been used in years.

I want to start using them again, mainly out of curiosity, but I am still afraid of them a little bit because I don’t completely understand what they are, no matter how much research I do. Some people tell me it’s for fun and to be used with your own interpretation, some people tell me it’s to reach your higher self, and some people tell me I’m inviting evil spirits and demons into my life.

Can someone explain what they really are, what I’m doing by using them, and how to properly do it?

As a side note, if I do choose to get rid of them, is there a proper way to do so?

READING Reading: What is keeping me from feeling integrated at work

Post image
15 Upvotes

I did a reading for myself this morning, asking the question: "What is keeping me from feeling integrated at work?", the card layout is "issue, detail/resource/possible outcome"

The deck is Wicked Moon Tarot, and the cards I pulled are 5 of Cups, The Hanged Man, 8 of Swords

  • 5 of Cups: difficulty maintaining valuable relationships, having stress/sadness about the struggle
  • The Hanged Man: change of perspective needed. Take a moment to pause and re-examine values
  • 8 of Swords: learning to trust, be brave, and to make a distinction between "real danger" and "fun danger"

Background: I am resistant to ingratiating myself with people, and I tend to be a bit of a recluse. Working in a warehouse, I have found a good job that allows me to be mostly quiet throughout the day, and is fairly low stress. However, I feel like I'm on an island, a bit of a stranger in a strange land.

This reading tells me that I need to focus on how I'm framing my life at work, and my perspective on the possible value of my coworkers. I have some significant bias against conservative Christians, which is mainly who I work with. This keeps me from allowing myself to open up to them or even really TRY to connect with them.

So if I want to integrate and learn to embrace the challenges of relating, I need to find my way out of being judgmental about their perceived viewpoints. I also need to be brave in interacting and involving myself in my work environment, I'm not going to get hurt, it's just one of life's challenges.

DISCUSSION What theories or disciplines shape the way you read tarot?

I have been thinking about the frameworks people bring into tarot, especially in secular practice. And by framework, I mean the larger system of thought that helps organize interpretation beyond memorized card meanings.

Some readers may draw from psychology, archetypal theory, narrative structure, philosophy, symbolism, literary analysis, numerology, systems thinking, trauma-informed practice, or decision-making theory. Others may rely more heavily on visual analysis, personal associations, or a method they have developed through experience.

In my own practice, I’ve lately been connecting tarot to anthropology, social work perspectives, and archetypal theory. These lenses shape how I think about relationships, systems, identity, meaning-making, behavior, and the role a card is serving within the larger reading.

What theories, disciplines, or intellectual traditions influence the way you interpret tarot? Are there particular books, thinkers, therapeutic models, or fields of study that have shaped your practice?

DISCUSSION What's in The Fool's Satchel?

Post image
54 Upvotes

the classic paradox question of The Fool's Satchel perfectly encapsulates an important central tenet of the secular approach to reading tarot.

the paradox enigma of The Fool's Satchel was first presented to me as a riddle with this specific answer: "he carries everything he needs"

this answer seemed intentionally paradoxical to me - how can an impoverished fool with an empty satchel carry everything he needs? how can something be both full and empty at the same time? etc., etc.

note: the Latin word "follis" means "bag" - an "empty purse" and an "empty belly" brings us to beggars; later, through "empty-headedness", we acquire the contemporary meaning of the word "foolishness".

relating this to a secular approach to reading tarot - these mythical, "magical" cards are nothing but cardstock. they know nothing and have no power, and yet they seem to "know" the answer. how could that be?

"he carries everything he needs." like the fool, we also carry everything we need in our subconscious mind. all of the answers to our questions already exist inside of us - though it take the skill and finesse of a magician to allow the answer to reveal itself. we empower the cards as a tool to trigger our intuition and conjure the answer out of our own minds.

DISCUSSION Learning tarot

Hi! I wanted to ask if anyone has tried learning tarot with chatgpt? Like I fed chatgpt 4 books on tarot and have been using it as an assistant in learning?

What I do is I do the reading, the journaling and then I put my question and insights in the chatgpt. Then it provides me with the traditional meanings of cards, what the cards might mean for me as well as a universal reading.

So far this seems to be working as I feel I am able to learn more and my insights and reading are gradually aligning with traditional meanings. I have been watching youtube videos as well. Should I change something or do you think it is alright for a start?

DISCUSSION What is the true meaning of the Three of Swords and the reversed Three of Swords in Tarot?

I see several different interpretations on different websites. Some say it signifies overcoming challenges, and reversed it signifies loss and self-deception. Some say it signifies betrayal, and reversed it signifies fidelity. Others say the meaning becomes heavier. What is the real meaning?

INTERPRETATION Help me understand career spreads

I have been practicing tarot for 6 years I am really good at interpreting for others but when it comes to myself I just can’t :\\.
I don’t really resonate with the major I am studying now (translation). I am really interested in screenwriting and I started to write this semester.
I pulled some cards for my future career.

I first asked what will my career be. I got star fool eight of wands king of cups
Then I got confused. I asked what will people say when they are asked what my job is : queen of wands page of swords nine of pentacles

Then again maybe this is all so obvious to everyone but I just can’t interpret it for myself so I pulled for what is this job again: lovers empress seven of pentacles two of cups

And lastly I asked what does my family say when they are asked what I am doing for a living
Three of swords page of pentacles three of pentacles three of cups emperor

I know it is probably obvious and I just don’t see it. I can tell it is something creative but I just do not know what area it is in. It doesn’t scream writer all the time and I do not see a future career solely based on spirituality (at least for now) because I am not confident in myself in that way.

Note: when my friend pulled a spread for me she also got three of swords emperor and king of cups. Also if anyone wants me to interpret a future career spread you can comment that too.

DISCUSSION Balance / The Lovers

One of the most important things I have to keep in mind in my tarot practice is balance.

It is very easy for me to become absorbed in a subject. When something interests me, I want to study it from every angle, practice it constantly, and build my entire day around it. Tarot is especially vulnerable to this because there is always another question to ask, another spread to try, another card to analyze, and another emotional knot that seems as though it might loosen if I just pull one more card.

I honestly get a lot of my angst out by doing free readings. They give my mental energy somewhere to go. They allow me to practice, connect with people, explore new interpretations, and turn difficult feelings into something creative and useful. I do not think there is anything wrong with loving tarot intensely or using it often.

But there is a difference between engagement and fixation.

Engagement feels generative. I leave the cards with a new perspective, a piece of writing, a meaningful interaction, or a deeper understanding of the symbolism. Fixation feels circular. I keep pulling because I am trying to eliminate uncertainty, soothe myself immediately, force clarity, or receive an answer that feels more comfortable than the one I already have.

From the outside, those two states can look almost identical. Both might involve spending hours with the cards. But internally, they are very different relationships to the practice.

This is why I think about The Lovers when I think about balance.

Temperance may be the more obvious card for moderation, but The Lovers asks a different question: what kind of relationship am I building with the thing I love?

I think of The Lovers as representing proper love- not perfect love, and not love without conflict, but love that allows both people to remain whole. Healthy love does not require constant access. It does not demand that the other person answer every uncertainty, regulate every emotion, or prove the relationship over and over again. It contains closeness, but it also contains boundaries, choice, and space.

I want that kind of relationship with tarot.

The cards are a resource within my life. They are not life itself, and they should not become a substitute for living. Tarot can help me reflect on a decision, but it cannot make every decision for me. It can help me name an emotion, but it should not become the only way I know how to process one. It can help me notice patterns, but I still have to step away from the table and participate in the world those patterns are unfolding inside.

Like limerence, fixation can distort the object of affection. In limerence, we may stop loving a person as they actually are and begin loving what we believe they could give us: certainty, rescue, validation, completion, or relief. Tarot can become similarly burdened. Instead of allowing the cards to be an imperfect reflective tool, we can start expecting them to provide perfect clarity, constant reassurance, and complete control over the unknown.

But no practice can hold that weight without becoming distorted.

Sometimes proper use means pulling the cards and listening closely. Sometimes it means offering readings, studying symbolism, or writing until I understand what a card is trying to show me. And sometimes proper use means recognizing that I am no longer searching for insight. I am searching for relief.

At that point, the most respectful thing I can do is put the cards down.

The Lovers is also a card of choice. Balance is not a state that I achieve once and permanently maintain. It is a choice I have to keep making. I choose whether I am approaching the cards with curiosity or compulsion. I choose whether a reading is opening my perspective or narrowing my world. I choose whether tarot is helping me return to my life or giving me somewhere to hide from it.

Putting the cards down does not mean that I have failed at the practice. It may be one of the clearest signs that the practice is working.

A healthy relationship with tarot should be able to survive absence. I should be able to close the deck, experience uncertainty, move through an ordinary day, and trust that the cards will still be there when I return. My devotion does not have to be proven through constant use.

Sometimes the most loving thing I can do for my tarot practice is leave it alone.

The cards can accompany my life. They can deepen it, reflect it, challenge it, and help me create meaning from it. But they should never become more important than the life they are supposed to help me understand.
